Art, tailgate party and banquet highlight MSU Ag Appreciation Weekend

November 04, 2002
Montana State University College of Agriculture invites you to visit campus during MSU Ag Appreciation Weekend Friday and Saturday Nov. 15-16.

Events that week include an art show, agricultural economics lecture, steer judging, tailgate party, football game, dinner/dance and a silent auction to benefit students.

"We're ready to feed 500 people at the tailgate," says Sandra Germann, development director for the college. The college and the Montana Extension Service host the tailgate, which is sponsored by First Interstate Bank, Montana Stockgrowers Association, Montana Grain Growers Association, Stockman Bank, Montana Livestock Ag Credit, Fort Dodge Animal Health, Gary France Real Estate and the Montana Farm Bureau Federation. The tailgate will be from 10 a.m. to noon, Saturday Nov. 16. The football game that day pits the MSU Bobcats against Portland State.

Tickets for the tailgate are free from the college of agriculture, county Extension agents, or by calling 994-7671 or 994-6816. However, a free tailgate ticket does not get you into the football game. Call 994-CATS to reserve football tickets.

"We're going to be in a big white tent on the east side of the stadium," said Terry Wolfe of the Montana 4-H Foundation.

The Ag Appreciation Art Show is in MSU's Strand Union Building Exit Gallery from Nov. 4 - Nov. 15. The Exit Gallery will host an opening party Nov. 8 from 5-7 p.m. The gallery is open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., but will be closed Saturday Nov. 16 to allow artwork to be moved to the ballrooms for the silent auction.

Over 500 FFA students will be on campus Nov. 14-16 for competitions and their annual convention. Their events begin with livestock judging at the Gallatin County Fairgrounds Thursday Nov. 14 at 2 p.m., continue Friday and Saturday with many events around campus, and conclude with awards in the Strand Union Building Ballroom at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

Friday Nov. 15, people are invited to observe the MSU Livestock Judging Team as it takes the measure of steers donated to the Steer a Year program. Judging will be at the Miller Pavilion west of campus at 2 p.m. Livestock growers donate steers that benefit the College of Agriculture student activities fund, the Athletic Scholarship Association, and the MSU Rodeo Team.

Friday Nov. 15 at 7:30 p.m., the M. L. Wilson Lecture will be held at Hagar Auditorium of Museum of the Rockies. The guest lecturer is Joseph W. Glauber of the USDA. His topic will be "2002 Farm Bill: What are the Domestic and International Implications?"

Activities Nov. 16 start with the tailgate party before the MSU vs. Portland State game.
This year's Outstanding Agricultural Leaders will be acknowledged during the game and recognized during that evening's Boots and Bowties Banquet. Selected by an MSU College of Agriculture committee, the two winners in the agricultural producer category are Kevin Halverson of Big Timber and David L. McClure of Lewistown. The two people being honored for their public service to agriculture are Greg Bennett of Ronan and Sen. Conrad Burns of Washington D.C.

Game day, much of the work from the Art Show and many more items will be part of a silent auction in SUB Ballroom C. The auction begins at 3 p.m. Saturday Nov. 16 and continues until 7 p.m. Proceeds of the auction benefit the College of Agriculture student activities fund.

The Silent Auction with over 160 items ranging from bronze sculpture and jewelry to clothing and food will begin at 4 p.m. Saturday in the Strand Union Building Ballroom D and continue until 7 p.m. This auction raises funds for the College of Agriculture student fund. The traditional Boots and Bowties Banquet and dance begins in the same ballroom at 5:30 p.m. with a no-host social hour. Tickets for the banquet and steak dinner cost $30 and are available from Lynn Speakman at 406 994-5744 or 215 Linfield Hall. The band for the dance will be Country Tradition.
