Gorham, MSU win top honors at university photographers' competition
June 24, 2008
Montana State University's photographers and its flagship magazine won top honors at the recent national symposium of the University Photographers Association of America held in Auburn, Ala.
MSU News Service photographer Kelly Gorham was awarded first place in UPAA's news and features photography category and an honorable mention for sports photography in the annual print competition. The news photo featured an image of campus researchers preparing for a NASA shuttle mission and the sports photo was of MSU skier Amy Lattimer at the NCAA Regional Skiing Championships.
Points were also tallied at the symposium for a year-long, monthly photography competition in which Gorham placed eighth overall and second for sports photography.
The spring 2008 issue of Mountains and Minds, MSU's magazine, earned first place in the general publications category recognizing the best use of photography in a publication. The magazine included photographs by Gorham and Stephen Hunts, both MSU staff photographers. The issue also included photographs taken by Jeffrey Conger and Allison Harmon, both MSU professors, as well as shots by Katie Hartley, a freelance photographer. Bridget Ashcraft led the team of graphic designers from MSU's office of Communications and Public Affairs. The magazine is edited by Carol Schmidt.
The UPAA was founded in 1961 by a group of university photographers in the New England area. The membership has grown to include university photographers from across the United States, Canada, Australia and Israel.
