Photo Feature: Riding for health

June 26, 2008
 MSU photo by Kelly Gorham.
Crow men in traditional dress rode bareback Tuesday at the Four Dances historical site near Billings to reenact a sacred Crow legend and spiritually launch a men's health program on the Crow Reservation affiliated with the new Center for Native Health Partnerships at MSU'. It is also the first program in the state funded by a $6.5 million National Institutes of Health grant that MSU received last year to develop partnerships between Montana Native American communities and health researchers. The Crow men's health program is a sister program to Messengers for Health on the Crow Reservation, an MSU/Crow partnership focused on eliminating cervical cancer on the reservation. Messengers for Health, co-directed by Alma McCormick and MSU professor Suzanne Christopher, has become a national model for community-based research programs as well as an American Cancer Society model for working in underserved communities. Tuesday's ride also launched the Crow's annual Native American Days and its 2008 theme, Crow men's health.
