MSU researcher to appear on History Channel

BOZEMAN -- A Montana State University scientist who searches for exotic plants that might contain beneficial microbes will appear in a one-hour show airing this month on the History Channel.
Gary Strobel, an MSU professor in plant sciences and plant pathology, will be featured in a segment of "Modern Marvels: Mold and Fungus." The program is scheduled to air at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, and 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20. Producer Melissa Fuller said viewers should check their local television listings, however, since air times may vary on certain satellite providers. The show will also re-air at other times.
Filming for Strobel's segment took place at MSU, in the woods near Bozeman and in a Belgrade business that builds environmentally friendly portable toilets with a mix of fungi and other ingredients, Fuller said. The business, Phillips Environmental Products, will soon change its name to Cleanwaste. Strobel is featured in a segment on good fungi, Fuller said. The rest of the show will look at other aspects of fungi and mold, including penicillin, a mushroom farm in Pennsylvania and mold remediation in homes.
