MSU hosts Montana State Science Olympiad Nov. 26

November 20, 2002 -- Brenda McDonald
You've got to drop some eggs to make science exciting. Young science students from throughout Montana will be doing just that as they compete in the egg drop event during the 18th annual Montana State Science Olympiad on the campus of Montana State University Nov. 26. In the egg drop event, students must build a crate that will protect an egg when dropped from 10 meters off the ground. While the events are intended to be fun, the budding young scientists from across the state take the competition seriously. Students and their teacher-coaches will be watching the scoreboard anxiously throughout the day to see who will qualify to compete in the national competition in the spring.

Rolland Karlin, coach of the Big Timber Middle School team, said that he brings his students to the Science Olympiad because it adds a non-classroom dimension to science education.

"It inspires kids to go above and beyond what they would normally do in school." he said. "It provides students who are not succeeding in other areas an avenue to express themselves academically and experience fun and success in learning."

More than 80 teams from high schools and junior highs throughout Montana from as near as Bozeman to as far as Fairfield and Libby will be participating in the event. A broad representation of the natural and physical sciences are included in the 28 competitive events, including "Reach for the Stars," "Science Crime Busters" and "Disease Detective."

Both individual and team excellence will be awarded, with Olympic-style medals to be presented for first, second and third place finishes for each event, and trophies for the three junior high and senior high teams that accumulate the most total points. The winning team from each division qualifies to compete in the national competition to be held at Ohio State University.
