Ryan Johnson and Ariana Lee, two Montana State University athletes who are completing stellar senior seasons, will be honored between the third and fourth quarters of the Cat-Griz game Saturday as the Montana Campus Compact 2002 Montana Athletes in Service Award winners.
Johnson, a running back on the Bobcat football team from Ft. Collins, Colo., will graduate in pre-physical therapy. He has volunteered for the Health South Rehabilitation Center, Bozeman Deaconess Hospital, Eagle Mount, The Muscular Dystrophy Association, ALTA Physical Therapy & Fitness, Rocky Mountain Football Camp, Campus Crusade for Christ, and he serves as a Leader for Athletes in Action. Johnson is a two-time first team Verizon Academic All-American. This year he was named a National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame Scholar-Athlete. The award carries an $18,000 post-graduate scholarship.
Lee, a political science major from Lander, Wyo., is a member of the Bobcat Track and Field Team and the captain of the Women's Cross Country Team. Ariana has been active in Little Bobcat Track, Junior Achievement at the Monforton School, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Friends of Max Baucus, the Lewis and Clark Marathon, and she has been a Christus Collegium volunteer in addition to other community service activities. Lee, the Bobcat women's top runner, will compete at the NCAA Championships next week, earning one of the four individual at-large berths in the country.
University of Montana athletes who will receive the award are Jill Henkel, a women's basketball player and Ryan O'Neill, who plays tennis for the Grizzlies.
MSU President Geoff Gamble and UM President George Dennison will present the awards at Saturday's ceremonies.
The Montana Campus Compact is a nonprofit coalition of 17 college and university presidents, chancellors, and deans committed to helping students develop the values and skills of citizenship through civic engagement and participation in public service. It is the only statewide higher education organization whose primary purpose is to support campus-based community public service.
