BOZEMAN - Eighteen Montana 4-H youth have earned their way to the 81st annual National 4-H Congress. The 2002 National 4-H Congress will focus on international issues and trends as well as cultural diversity, group dynamics and community service. The program is designed to help young people develop the knowledge base and leadership skills to positively affect change in our world. The event will be held in Atlanta, a city which provides outstanding local program resources as well as a positive backdrop for youth issue discussions.
The event will include more than 1,300 youth and will be held Nov. 29-Dec. 3 at the Atlanta Hyatt Regency.
These 18 4-H’ers have been awarded this opportunity for their excellence in 4-H projects, leadership and state competitions. The following Montana youths will be attending:
Award Winners:
Anna Marxer, Beaverhead County, Leadership
"Hi! I’m Anna, and I am a 10 year 4-H member from the Dillon HiLighters 4-H Club. I am home schooled, and a senior this year. I have taken a variety of projects over the years, including market hogs for eight years. I am the Senior Ambassador as well as the State 4-H Publicity Officer. I have been a member of the Livestock Judging team for several years and I also help host a weekly live radio show about 4-H in the summer. I am also extremely involved in my church and designing web pages. When I graduate, I hope to go on a six month exchange to another country through the IFYE program."
Mason Zier, Big Horn County, Stir-Ups
Mason is a senior at Hardin High. He is a nine-year member of the Little Horn Beef Rustlers 4-H club of Lodge Grass. His projects have included gardening, welding, woodworking, rockets, quilting, market beef, swine, lambs and sheep breeding. He is a past winner of the Heywood Foundation Scholarship. Outside of 4-H, Mason is active in demolition derby, racing, hunting, water sports, football, and is a member of FFA. His future plans are to attend Wyoming Tech’s diesel mechanic school in Laramie, Wyo.
Samantha Rauser, Broadwater County, Swine
Samantha is from Toston, where she is a nine-year member of the Crow Creek Clover 4-H Club. She is a senior at Broadwater High School in Townsend, where she plays volleyball and is involved in Aim Higher, BPA, Youth Council, NHS and 'B' Club. She also is very active in her church youth group. Her 4-H projects have included cooking, sewing, quilting, teen leadership, horse, market beef and market and breeding swine. She is the president of her 4-H club and 4-H Teen Council and also Senior Class Representative to student council.
Bobbie McCauley, Glacier County, Beef
Bobbie is a ten-year member of the Longview 4-H Club. He is a 2002 graduate of Cut Bank High School. Over the years, Bobbie has taken a variety of projects including crop and soil science, sheep, self determined, breeding and market beef. Bobbie has enjoyed participating in livestock judging, 4-H Congress, Marias Fair and the Montana State Fair. Bobbie is currently attending Helena College of Technology, majoring in metals technology.
Ty McDonald, Judith Basin County, Leadership
A senior at Geyser High School in Judith Basin County, Ty is a nine-year member of the Lucky Clover 4-H Club. In school, he actively participates in football, basketball, track, National Honor Society, band, choir, and is president of his class and the student body. Ty also enjoys his church activities. In 4-H, Ty has participated in a wide range of areas including beef, horse, leather craft, range, weeds, photography, shooting sports, teen leadership and livestock judging. He is also the 4-H club President and credits 4-H for helping him become the strong, outgoing leader he is today.
Benjamin Sloan, Judith Basin County, Fashion Revue
Ben is a junior at Stanford High School, and is the president of the Stanford Scramblers 4-H Club. He has been a member of for eight years. He is currently serving as Judith Basin’s Senior Ambassador. Ben is also active in FFA (president), BPA, football, basketball, track, softball and his church group.
Amanda Shotzberger, Lincoln County, Beef, Community Service, Achievement
As a nine-year member of the Eagles 4-H Club, Amanda has served as a club officer, County Ambassador, State 4-H Officer, Montana Extension Advisory Council Rep. and on the National 4-H Youth Directions Council. Through 4-H, she has taken horse, beef, rabbits, dog, poultry, vet science, shooting sports, hunting, woodworking and more. She spends her free time helping out in her community, hunting, working on the family ranch, snowboarding, running track, and is active in Key Club, National Honors Society, and Jazz Band. She loves the outdoors and working with animals. She hopes to become a large animal veterinarian in the future.
Jessica Mount, Park County, Public Speaking
Jessica is a freshman at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington. She is from the Livingston Rockies 4-H Club, and is entering her 11th year. Jessica has been competing in speaking for many years. She enjoys raising swine for a market project as well as photography and home environment. Besides 4-H, she has been active in FFA and Student Council.
Hailey Wilmer, Park County, Public Speaking
Hailey is an eight-year 4-H member, and is the current president of the Livingston Rockies 4-H Club in Park County. She has taken market swine, photography, leather work and market sheep projects. Hailey is a junior at Park High School with a 4.0 GPA, is active in FFA, cross-country, track, 4-H Teen Leader Council and is 4-H Camp Counselor.
Chelsea McKenna, Petroleum County, Demonstration/Illustrated Talk
"I am a fifth-year member in the Shamrock 4-H Club and a sophomore here at Winnett High School. I am in band, track, newspaper, junior leaders and the 4-H exchange program. Some of my projects have included horsemanship, beef, photography, leather and cooking. I live on a ranch 15 miles out of Winnett, Montana."
Jody Gay, Powder River County, Leadership
Jody Gay is a nine-year member of the Mizpah Masters 4-H Club located in Powder River County. Her 4-H projects over the years have included horse, beef, sheep, quilting, cross-stitch, leadership and foods. A senior at Powder River County High School, she is active in student government, is a football manager and is a member of the National Honor Society and Business Professionals of America. Jody also participates in Youth in Action and the Teen 4-H Club
Nicole Rumph, Powder River County, Foods
Nicole Rumph is a junior at Powder River County High School. She has been active in the Biddle Busy Beavers 4-H Club for seven years, and has taken the foods project for five years. She is also involved with Teen 4-H. Outside of 4-H, Nicole is a football manager, a member of the school golf team and a basketball player. Her future plans include college (majoring in engineering) and traveling the world.
Derek Naegeli, Sanders County, Demonstration/Illustrated Talk
Derek Naegeli is a freshman at Thompson Falls High School. As a seven-year member of the Whitepine Happy Workers 4-H Club of Sanders County, his projects include forestry, poultry, weeds and teen leadership. Outside of 4-H, Derek enjoys cartooning, painting, band, track, cross- country and working around the ranch.
Erin Nyberg, Sanders County, Demonstration/Illustrated Talk
"My name is Erin Nyberg, and I am a senior at Hot Springs High School. This is my ninth year in 4-H. My projects have included market lamb, photography, cooking, dog training and forestry. Besides 4-H, I participate in volleyball, basketball and Honor Society. I plan to attend the University of Montana in the fall of 2003."
Nicole Grossman, Teton County, Sewing
A senior at Power High School, Nicole Grossman participates in volleyball, basketball, pep club and drama. She is a nine-year member of the Challenging Champs 4-H Club. Her projects are clothing, quilting and teen leadership. Nicole is also an active member in her church.
Landon Berglee, Yellowstone County, Beef
Landon is a nine-year member currently in the Shepherd Pioneers 4-H Club. His 4-H projects have included horse, beef, sheep, vet science, shooting sports, woodworking, leather craft, photography, horse judging and sheep leader. He is a home school senior participating in track and is active at church. He enjoys the outdoors, livestock and working with youth. His plans for the future are a civil engineering degree and not straying far from agriculture.
Rachel Glenn, Yellowstone County, Shooting Sports and Illustrated Talk
Seventeen year old Rachel Glenn from Billings, is an eight-year member of the Ruff Riders 4-H Club. Rachel is a senior and has been home schooled all her life. Her main 4-H project is shooting sports. She is the top shooter in the state and has competed in several Junior Olympic competitions. Rachel has also been a 4-H Ambassador and is Junior Leaders Club President for Yellowstone County. Besides 4-H, Rachel’s activities have included ballet, piano, and working at a local veterinarian clinic.
Levi Osborne, Yellowstone County, Horse
A senior at Shepherd High School, Levi Osborne is involved in FFA, football, basketball, and National Honor Society. A nine-year career in 4-H has had the most impact in his life. His projects include goat, hog, horse and self determined. He annually attends 4-H Congress, 4-H camp, the Montana Fair and Interstate Exchange.
The Montana delegation will be chaperoned by Betty McCoy, Bozeman, State 4-H Program Leader; Wanda Pinnow, Baker, State 4-H Leaders Council; and Avice Hoff, Dagmar, President, Montana 4-H Council.
National 4-H Congress will join in the celebration of the 100th birthday of 4-H during the week of Nov.27-Dec. 3, 2002. The celebration will highlight 4-H's commitment to service by collecting a Centennial of Dimes, with the goal of 100 dimes (one dime for each year of 4-H) from every person attending the 2002 Annual National 4-H Congress.
The Montana 4-H Foundation, along with county 4-H councils and community sponsors, provides financial support for these delegates. The Montana 4-H Leader’s Council provides funding for chaperones, and MSU Extension provides support for their staff chaperones to attend National 4-H Congress.
The National 4-H Congress event is a program of the Cooperative State Research Education and Extension Service in participating states.
