Fifty-six steers were donated this year to the Montana State University Steer-a-Year Program, in addition to monetary support from 37 other donors.
"We are very pleased that the agriculture industry is supporting the university through this program," said Lisa Duffey, Steer-a-Year coordinator. "The program provides invaluable hands-on experience and critical monetary support to our students."
The steers, which were donated by livestock growers around the state, are being cared for by MSU College of Agriculture students and will be sold. Proceeds from the sale of the steers go to scholarships and activities for students in the College of Agriculture, the MSU Athletics program or the MSU Rodeo Team.
The MSU livestock judging team, coached by Marc King of Big Timber, evaluated steers during MSU Agricultural Appreciation Weekend, Nov. 15-16. The steers were evaluated on their potential growth rate and carcass quality. The student team judged that the best steer this year was donated by E.L. Peterson Ranch (Dean & Trudi Peterson) of Judith Gap.
