Ten 4-H alumni honored during Ag Appreciation Weekend 2002
November 22, 2002
BOZEMAN -- Ten 4-H alumni were honored during the recent Montana State University Agricultural Appreciation Weekend.
MSU 4-H and the Montana 4-H Foundation honored the 10 individuals "in recognition of each one's accomplishments exemplifying effective leadership, citizenship, community and public service, and success in his or her chosen career, with continued interest and participation in 4-H and other phases of the Extension program."
Those honored included Kayla Breen of Teton County, Ed Diemert of Liberty County, Ernest and Loretta Stordahl of Pondera County, Larry Krein of Lake County, June Krausz of Fergus County, Connie Lang of Fallon County, Arvid Eggen of Sheridan County, Wendy Morris of Flathead County and Kim Pletan of Meagher county.
Kayla Breen of Teton County was a 4-H member when growing up in Minnesota on a dairy farm. She is active in 4-H throughout Teton County and is an exceptionally involved member of the Choteau community, even as she raises her own four children, works as an intensive care unit nurse and fills in as nurse at the local clinic.
Ed Diemert of Liberty County serves actively at both the local and state level. He was a past 4-H member, serves in various capacities as an adult in the 4-H program, all while being a 4-H parent for his five children. Diemert is active in community and agricultural affairs, lending himself to serve on various committees and boards. He is a member of the Liberty County Board of Commissioners.
Ernest and Loretta Stordahl of Pondera County have spent many hours working for the betterment of 4-H. Their local Extension office describes them as "gentle, caring people who . . . always offer to help others and always carry through on those offers." Even with their commitment to 4-H, they also serve other aspects of the community. They mentor young people while maintaining a close relationship with their grown children and young grandchildren. Other 4-H leaders have looked to them as examples to emulate."
Larry Krein of Lake County was 10 years old when he started 4-H and he has been a major part of Lake County's 4-H program for the past 20 years. His contributions as a leader have greatly improved the county's beef projects, both breeding and market. His dedication to a cooperative functioning system is evident in his generous contribution of time and effort.
June Krausz of Fergus County was a very active 10-year member of 4-H in Yellowstone County and now serves as both a 4-H leader and Ambassador Key Leader in Fergus County. She has a great rapport with teenagers. Her work ethic is a wonderful example to the teens she works with. She works alongside teens as a partner and allows them to take the lead, while she supports them in anyway needed.
Connie Lang of Fallon County first interest was sewing. She practiced on lined paper without thread, then began making doll clothes. She has been giving back to the 4-H program as a sewing instructor/leader since the 1980s. She shares her knowledge and talents with her community. Lang also is active in her church, her community and on the Fallon County 4-H Council and the Fallon/Carter Extension Service.
Arvid Eggen of Sheridan County began with the Archer Go-Getters 4-H Club in 1952. He and his wife Linda encouraged their own children to experience 4-H opportunities. Arvid continues to be a valuable resource for the 4-H program. Today he works side-by-side with 4-H members to produce quality market beef. Eggen is known for never turning kids down when they ask for help. He models the 4-H motto, "learn by doing" and helps kids learn about hard work, dedication and responsibility.
Wendy Morris of Flathead County was a very active Flathead 4-H'er in her youth, with projects included sewing, market livestock and leadership. Now married with two children, she is still active in 4-H, serving as a leader for 10 years. She is the organizational leader for the Whitefish Trailblazers. During fair week, Morris takes vacation from her job to help at the fair, from barns to exhibit buildings to ringside.
Kim Pletan of Meagher County began as a 4-H'er. She brings enthusiasm for the 4-H program from her previous club experiences and is a vital part of the Meagher County 4-H Council. Kim believes in working for the kids and tries to offer information to give 4-H members opportunities to grow and learn. She is an excellent representative for the 4-H program through her past experiences, current participation, and continuing support.
