Delayed until Thursday: MSU avalanche expert's appearance on 'Good Morning America' grounded by bad weather
December 03, 2002 -- By MSU News Service
Ed Adams, a Montana State University civil engineering professor who researches the dynamics of snow during avalanches, will be a featured guest on the Thursday, Dec. 5 edition of ABC's "Good Morning America."
Adams had earlier been set to appear a day earlier, but ironically was grounded by inclement weather at Denver International Airport.
Adams, who has received international publicity for his study of avalanches while in a shack bolted to a boulder that is being inundated by an avalanche, will speak about an article about him that appeared in the December 2002 edition National Geographic Adventure magazine.
Adams said he has been told he will appear in a segment aired between 7and 8 a.m. Thursday EDT. He doesn't know what time the feature will appear in Bozeman.
Adams said he hasn't even seen the National Geographic Adventure magazine that spawned the publicity, but he has been receiving phone calls and e-mails for the past couple of days asking him about the article and his research. Monday he received a call asking him if he could be in New York on Tuesday and appear on the popular early-morning news-talk show on Wednesday. Because of his flight delay, the program is expected to be aired Thursday.
"They said, 'Could you get on a plane tomorrow?'" Adams recalled. "I thought, what the heck? To study avalanches, you have to be able to react."
Adams said he is taking video clips of avalanches with him, including one taken by Randy Wimburg, a local videographer, and expects that one of the clips will be aired during the interview. The clips were filmed at Adams' research site north of Bridger Bowl ski area.
Adams and his research area, "Revolving Door," a bowl near Bridger Bowl, are the subject of "Buried Alive and Loving It." The article, in the national adventure-travel slick magazine, details how MSU researchers study the physics of avalanches.
While Adams is the only MSU researcher to appear with Diane Sawyer and Charles Gibson, he is one of a team of scientists who are internationally renowned for their work studying avalanches and snow dynamics.
