Australian scientist to head MSU's Computer Science Department
December 04, 2002 -- Carol Schmidt
BOZEMAN -- Michael Oudshoorn, a computer scientist and Associate Dean of the Engineering Faculty at the University of Adelaide in Australia, has been hired as the new head of the Computer Science Department in Montana State University's College of Engineering.
Oudshoorn's teaching and research interests are concurrent and distributed systems, software engineering and programming languages. He is currently project leader of the Alchemy Project, an international collaborative research effort involving scientists from Japan, Wales and the United States.
Oudshoorn serves on editorial boards of a number of journals, including Asian Information-Science-Life: An International Journal, International Journal of Computers and Their Application, Information: An International Interdisciplinary Journal, and Journal of Computing and Information. He has also served on organizing committees of numerous national regional, and international conferences and is a member of many technical committees in support of the computer science profession.
"Everyone who met Michael when he was on campus was struck with his high level of energy and his vision of how to take the department to the next level of excellence," said Robert Marley, dean of the College of Engineering.
Oudshoorn is expected to begin his duties with MSU in January 2003.
Oudshoorn was selected after an international search to fill the department head position vacated by Denbigh Starkey. Starkey returned to full-time teaching and research in the department after 18 years as professor and department head.
The computer science program at MSU is fully accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). It is designated as a key school for student recruitment and industry support by Hewlett Packard's VLSI division, Tektronix, Inc., and Micron Technology, Inc.
