Two college scholarships are designated by their donors primarily for students coming from central, eastern and southern Montana.
The scholarships are for students who enroll in the Montana State University College of Agriculture to pursue degrees related to agriculture after designation.
The George S. Severson Agricultural Merit Scholarship is for full-time MSU-Bozeman undergraduates with good scholastic performance as shown by high school grades (for freshmen) or by college grades for college students. Though a merit scholarship, financial need can serve as "tie-breaker" criteria. The scholarship covers full tuition and fees. It may be renewed for up to four academic years, as long as the student maintains a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or above and makes satisfactory progress towards a degree. Severson was a long-time rancher in the Miles City, Baker and Jordan areas. His family established the scholarship in his honor. The Severson scholarship is for students coming from the counties of Judith Basin, Fergus, Petroleum, Garfield, McCone, Richland, Dawson, Wibaux, Prairie, Fallon, Carter, Powder River, Custer, Rosebud, Treasure, Big Horn, Yellowstone, Carbon, Stillwater, Golden Valley, Wheatland, Sweet Grass, Musselshell.
The Sobotka Memorial Agriculture Scholarship is for an incoming freshman. First preference will be given to students from Dawson, Richland, McCone, Wibaux and Prairie counties. Second preference will be given to a student from other rural areas of Montana. Financial need may be a consideration in the award. Mrs. Mary Sobotka of Glendive created the endowment establishing the scholarship in memory of her husband, August, who died in 1997.
The College of Agriculture offers over $425,000 in scholarships to undergraduate students enrolling in MSU agricultural programs. To apply for these scholarships, students' applications must by post marked by Feb. 1.
Students can apply for these and other scholarships by filling out a one-page application form. These forms are available from every Montana high school guidance counselor. Application forms for current students, incoming students, and transfer students are also available on the web at http://www.montana.edu/agriculture/Student/Scholarships.html along with a list of scholarships.
