UPBAC solicits campus input Thursday on new priorities
December 10, 2002 -- Carol Schmidt
The University Planning, Budget and Analysis Committee (UPBAC) has a vision of Montana State University's future, and they want to hear what the university community thinks of it at a public forum set for 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 12 in Ballroom D of the SUB.
UPBAC developed a draft document summarizing the university priorities, "Preliminary Strategic Concepts and Priorities." A final version will be used in UPBAC's budgeting and planning efforts during the coming year and for the future. The committee has scheduled Thursday's meeting to solicit input from the campus community.
"Once the process is complete, this document holds the potential of establishing key priorities for the institution, but also establishes the way UPBAC would identify programs for additional investment," said Craig Roloff, MSU's vice president for administration and finance as well as the deputy chairman of the UPBAC committee.
UPBAC is proposing two new university priorities for the coming year. The first new priority is to raise the academic profile of MSU-Bozeman by recruiting, increasing retention efforts and marketing.
"These steps may increase the selectivity of MSU-Bozeman," the committee believes.
The second new priority is to work with MSU's College of Technology (COT) in Great Falls to offer classes in Bozeman. Roloff explains that the COT could offer developmental courses, two-year and certificate programs, night classes and other courses not currently offered by MSU-Bozeman.
The document also suggests identifying MSU programs that are targeted for growth or increased investment, increasing non-resident enrollment and increasing enrollment in summer sessions. New programs should not be added unless they fit one of MSU's strategic priorities of recruiting, retention or enhancing quality, according to the new plan.
The document was developed by UPBAC using a previous set of ideas developed by the university's Strategic Planning Committee (SPC) earlier this year.
"This is a blend of specific priorities and a commitment to a decision-making process," Roloff said. "It's important for UPBAC to hear comments from the campus community members regarding both the specific and general directions that UPBAC is considering."
