Jim Bauder, professor of land resources and environmental sciences at Montana State University and Extension soil-water specialist, has been named to the National Academies' National Research Council Committee on the Management and Effects of Coalbed Methane Development and Produced Water in the Western United States. Bauder's Extension education program has focused primarily on irrigated crop production, saline and sodic soil management and nitrate movement in soil. He recently completed a study for the Montana Department of Environmental Quality on the effects of repeated rainfall on salt and sodium affected soils of southeastern Montana. Bauder's 15-month appointment partners him with eight other nationally recognized scientists. The National Research Council Committee will report to the National Academy of Science and Congress at the conclusion of its investigation.
