Winners announced in first Steer-A-Year contest for 2008/09
December 05, 2008 -- From MSU News Service
BOZEMAN -- Top steers in Montana State University's first contest of the 2008/09 Steer-A-Year program were donated by producers between Miles City and Philipsburg and as far north as Geyser.
The latest SAY contest kicked off Nov. 14 with 26 steers, said program director John Paterson, MSU Extension beef specialist. To determine the winners of the Best Initial Feeder Steer contest, the steers were divided into two groups: lightweight and heavyweight. They were then judged by Marc King, SAY coordinator; the MSU Judging Team and students from the "Introduction to Livestock Evaluation" class taught by King and Jane Ann Boles.
Winners in the lightweight category (640 pounds or less) were:
First -- A 618-pound steer donated by Harry Allen of Custer.
Second -- A 634-pound steer donated by Bob Redland of Hysham.
Third -- A 596-pound steer donated by Indreland Angus of Big Timber.
Fourth -- A 636-pound steer donated by Lennie and Ty McDonald of Geyser.
Winners in the heavyweight category (more than 640 pounds) were:
First -- A 676-pound steer donated by John McDonald of Philipsburg.
Second -- A 738-pound steer donated by Gary Adams (Yellowstone Boys and Girls Ranch) of Billings.
Third -- A 760-pound steer donated by Dean and Trudy Peterson of Judith Gap.
Fourth -- A 644-pound steer donated by Rob and Cindy Fraser, Monty Lesch, and Eric Moore of Miles City.
Also donating steers this fall were Page Anderson, Beau Bradley, Bob and Kathy Brekke, Jim Butcher, Jake Callentine, Dave Cameron, Ryan and Lindsey Clark, Dusty Hahn, Leo McDonnell, Rick and Nancy Cline, Pat Descheemaeker, Bill Donald, Kevin and Ron Halverson, Travis and Mick Standley, Felton Angus, Race King, Muir Ranch, Bair Ranch, Sam Phares, Randy and Emily Smith, Brian Dickerson and MSU's College of Agriculture.
Cash for feed was donated by Taylor and Shannon Brown, Elise Donohue, John Goroski, John Green, Mike and Ella Mae Howard, Jim and Lorraine Peterson, Chuck and Pam Rein, John and Annette Schipf, Montana Livestock Ag Credit Inc., Dennis and Kris Descheemaeker, Caren Coffee and Caroline Davis. Vaccines were donated by Dennis Hodgson of Fort Dodge Animal Health.
Steers donated to the SAY program qualify for up to three contests. The first, the Best Initial Feeder Steer contest, focuses on predicted feedlot and carcass performance. The second, the Top Rate of Gain contest, looks at weight gained over 60 days. The third, the Best Carcass contest, considers the highest value per pound and per carcass.
SAY raises money for student scholarships and activities associated with MSU's College of Agriculture, MSU Bobcat Club and Rodeo Team. Most donors give live steers that are fed at the MSU farm and later sold. Other donors sell steers at a livestock auction and donate the proceeds. Some give cash or gifts of feed grain or forage. The MSU Livestock Judging Team is the primary benefactor of SAY donations given to the College of Agriculture.
The MSU Livestock Judging Team uses the steers to practice judging. The steers are also used in labs by MSU's beef management class, range livestock production class and feedlot management class.
