Bozeman-- Montana Shakespeare in the Parks will present Arthur Miller's "The Price" as part of its winter season in the Strand Union Theater on the Montana State University campus beginning Jan. 16.

During the winter season Shakespeare in the Parks (SIP) produces non-Shakespearean plays performed by local artists as fund raisers to support its summer tour. Past productions have included: "Always....Patsy Cline," "Shadowlands" and "Love Letters." "The Price" will feature four of Shakespeare in the Parks' distinguished alumni including: Gordon Carpenter (SIP 1983-86, 1993), Joel Jahnke (SIP artistic director), Kathy Jahnke ("Always..Patsy Cline," "Shadowlands") and Greg Owens ("Always..Patsy Cline").

"The Price" is a powerful and deeply moving play that received critical acclaim in its triumphant premiere in 1968, as well as its recent revival on Broadway. The play examines with compassion, humor and rare insight, the relationship of two long-estranged brothers who meet after many years to dispose of their father's belongings. The first is a policeman (played by Jahnke) who sacrificed his education and a promising career in science to care for his ruined, invalid father. The other is an eminent surgeon (played by Owens) who walked out on the demands of family to concentrate on personal success. Miller adds a marvelously crotchety, humorous and wise old Jewish furniture dealer (played by Carpenter) and the policeman's disillusioned, frustrated wife (played by Jahnke) and weaves a taut, exciting and superbly theatrical play which reveals the true characters of the brothers to each other, to themselves and to the audience.

The limited engagement runs Jan. 16-18, 23-25 in the Strand Union Theater. Tickets are $10 and $12 and may be reserved by calling 994-3310. Other ticket outlets include Albertsons in Belgrade and The First Interstate Bank on the MSU campus. All proceeds will benefit Montana Shakespeare in the Parks, an outreach program of MSU.
