BILLINGS--The 2003 Montana/Wyoming Sugarbeet Symposium will be held in Billings on Jan. 13 and 14, featuring educational workshops from Montana State University, other research universities, and experts from the sugar industry.
Monday's sessions focus on crops grown in rotation with sugarbeets, such as malt barley, dry beans, soybeans, hay barley, corn and safflower, and will cover pest control, agronomy, irrigation, value-added products, cattle feeding and crop insurance.
Tuesday sessions include: consumer attitudes about biotechnology; insect, weed and disease control; effects of the sugarbeet industry on land values; the Farm Bill; irrigation; best management practices for cooperatives; Montana water law; and the future of the North American sugar business.
Key speakers include Luther Markwart of the American Sugarbeet Growers Association, officers from sugar plants in Montana and Wyoming, and experts from Montana State University, Washington State University, Kansas State University, University of Nebraska and the University of Wyoming.
A trade show on both days will feature exhibits and products from many agricultural input suppliers. The event takes place at the Holiday Inn Trade Center in Billings.
The cost of the two-day conference is $35 if pre-registered; registration on site is $25 per day. All registrants receive a proceedings of the meeting, and those registering for Tuesday's sessions will receive a free copy of the new full-color, Sugarbeet Production Guide, a $25 value. Attendees can receive both certified crop advisor (CCA) and private applicator points.
