Should you order spring fertilizer now?
December 24, 2002 -- By Dennis Cash and Ron Carlstrom
Montana producers may want to call their agricultural dealers to inquire about early-order discounts on fertilizers. Most firms typically offer early discounts on seed, pesticides and fertilizer, during the winter months. As we near the end of 2002, producers are encouraged to check into their fertilizer order for spring, 2003.
Instability and political situations in the Middle East and Central America may increase fuel prices, and this will cause fertilizer prices to escalate significantly. Several Montana dealers have indicated that pre-payment before December 31 could lock in current fertilizer prices for spring delivery.
Grain markets and winter wheat growing conditions were fairly good during the fall. The moisture received across much of central Montana will benefit dryland spring grain and pasture production next year. With these recent optimistic circumstances, be sure to plan ahead for 2003. In many cases, the discounted fertilizer prices may significantly reduce your input costs. Producers are encouraged to evaluate their personal cash flow and tax situations before making year-end purchases.
