BOZEMAN -- Many people who attend horse training clinics wonder why the techniques they learned don't work when they get home.
Now they can gain insights and solutions by attending a demonstration titled, "I'm whispering, but my horse isn't listening." International horse clinician Jim Heird will give the demonstration on the first day of Montana State University's annual Equine Conference and Trade Show to be held Friday and Saturday, April 17 and 18, in Bozeman. Heird's demonstration is free with conference registration.
On the second day of the conference, Heird will give the Catlin Memorial Lecture and discuss current issues in the horse industry like disease risks, animal identification programs, demographic shifts in horse ownership, pending legislation and unwanted horses. Heird is president of the Colorado Horse Development Authority, director of the Colorado Agriculture and Rural Leadership Program and director of teaching and outreach for the Equine Center at Colorado State University. He is an approved judge for the American Quarter Horse Association.
In addition to Heird's presentations, the conference will include nationally-recognized speakers, Montana equine professionals and MSU faculty leading 12 breakout sessions on such topics as raising horses in the new economy, strangles, mare care and foaling, small pasture management, equine acupuncture, nutrition and more.
The conference will also include a horsemanship clinic featuring Jess Holloway, a well-known horseman and instructor in the Gallatin Valley and instructor for the MSU Colt Breaking and Training courses. The cost for riding in the April 17 clinic is $75. The cost to observe from the stands is $5.
The MSU Top of the West Ranch Horse Sale will be held the evening of April 18 in the Miller Pavilion. Fifty horses will be sold, including 35 working saddle horses from around the West and 15 horses that were donated to the Equine Boosters of MSU and trained in Hollaway's classes. Potential buyers can start previewing the horses at 4:30 p.m. The sale will begin at 6 p.m. A meal and concessions will be available on-site for purchase from Gallatin Valley Catering.
The Equine Conference, if registered before April 1, will cost $45 for adults and $25 for students. The cost after April 1 is $55 for adults and $35 for students. Registration includes Heird's demonstration on Friday evening and all Saturday events. The conference is sponsored by the MSU Extension Horse Program and will be held in the Miller Livestock Pavilion at MSU and the Gran Tree Inn and Convention Center in Bozeman.
