MSU awards two students 'Torley' awards for community involvement

Montana State University has honored seniors Elliott Barnhart and Ivie English with its 2009 Torlief Aasheim Community Involvement Awards.

The award, named for the late MSU alumnus Torlief "Torley" Aasheim, recognizes male and female senior students who, in addition to excelling academically, volunteer on campus and in the community.

Elliott Barnhart, a tight end for the Bobcat football team, has earned numerous athletic and academic honors, including being named an ESPN Academic All-American.

A native of Broadus, Mont., Barnhart has been a youth group leader at St. James Epi-scopal Church a gym coordinator and Pee Wee football coach for the Gallatin Valley YMCA. He has also volunteered with Eagle Mount and the Relay for Life.

A microbiology major, Barnhart has researched microorganisms involved in water contamination and coal-bed methane generation. Barnhart has presented at the West Coast Undergraduate Biological Research Conference and has received grant funding for his studies.

Ivie English, a Great Falls native, is double-majoring in psychological science and Spanish while double-minoring in political science and Latino studies. She has studied abroad twice and has taught English to Mexican immigrants in the Gallatin Valley.

English is the president of College Democrats and the ASMSU Exponent opinions edi-tor. She is a member several honor societies, a VOICE Center volunteer and a former AdvoCat student admissions representative. She has organized numerous activities and speakers at MSU.

Currently, she is MSU's Montana Legislative Intern, tracking legislation affecting MSU, providing information to legislators about MSU, acting as a liaison between campus institutions and state representatives.
