MSU's Student Research Celebration set for April 14

BOZEMAN -- More than 200 Montana State University students who conducted research this school year will present their findings April 14 at the Student Research Celebration.
Undergraduate and graduate students from every discipline will participate in the free public event that runs from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. in ballrooms B, C and D of MSU's Strand Union Building. Some students will present their research in the morning and others in the afternoon.
This year's participants studied everything from underground coal beds to microbreweries, said Steve Holmgren, director of MSU's Undergraduate Scholars Program, one of the event's organizers. Students researched honeybees, Antarctic ice, traffic patterns and a sensing device for pedestrians and cyclists. They photographed Bozeman and saw the effect of creative arts on rural women with chronic illness. They explored the broken dreams of Montana homesteaders and saw how Native American characters shaped American literature.
"Undergraduate research represents an opportunity for students to directly participate in work that pushes them beyond the classroom and often represents work at the cutting edge of their academic discipline," Holmgren said.
MSU has long held a spring conference where undergraduate students used posters or oral presentations to explain their research. Last year, the conference expanded to include graduate students. This year's event will consist of 42 graduate presentations and 168 undergraduate presentations. Most of the students will present their work with posters and informal conversations.
Student researchers conducted their research through the Undergraduate Scholars Program, Division of Graduate Education, core class requirements or independent arrangements with MSU mentors.
Event sponsors are the American Indian Research Opportunities Program, Hughes Undergraduate Biology Program, Center for Biofilm Engineering, Montana EPSCoR Program, Montana INBRE Program, Montana Space Grant Consortium and Big Sky Institute.
The Undergraduate Scholars Program, Office of the Provost and Office of Graduate Education organized this year's celebration.
