Tracy K. Brewer, a native of Ringling, Mont. and Montana State University Extension agent in Park County, received the Outstanding Young Range Professional Award at the Society for Range Management 62nd Annual Meeting in Albuquerque, N.M., in February. The award recognizes SRM members who exhibit superior performance and leadership potential in a range-related area.

As an MSU Extension agent in Park County since June 2008, Brewer's responsibilities include horticulture, agriculture and natural resources, including grazing and pasture management, farm and ranch management, livestock production, small acreage management, wildlife-livestock interactions and invasive plant management.

Brewer has focused on range management since entering her undergraduate program at MSU in 1992. In a short time, she has developed a strong group of contacts that includes academics, practicing rangeland professionals, future rangeland professionals (undergrad and graduate students), and the ranching community. The society, in selecting Brewer, said that she has done extensive research that is not only academically sound, but has immediate impact on the lives of ranching families, communities and on the sustainability of rangelands.

Elk-cattle interactions and integrated management of knapweed are two examples of Brewer's research interests. She has presented her work to professionals in scientific papers and presentations, but also to ranchers in their living rooms. The Society of Range Management described her as "melding the academic and ranching worlds together" and as "the epitome of the consummate extension rangeland professional."

Brewer also has been a leader within the Society for Range Management. She has been active in the International Mountain Section, a regular contributor to technical programs in range science, and chaired the SRM Nominations Committee for two years.
