MSU nursing professor attends summer institute on community research

August 19, 2009 -- MSU News Service
Charlene Winters, an associate professor in the MSU College of Nursing, was selected to attend a summer institute in New Orleans focused on community-based participatory research.
Charlene Winters, an associate professor in Montana State University's College of Nursing, attended an institute in early August focused on community-based participatory research.

The 2009 National Institutes of Health Summer Institute on Community-Based Participatory Research Targeting the Medically Underserved was held in New Orleans Aug. 2-7. Community-based participatory research is research conducted as an equal partnership between traditionally trained "experts" and members of a community. The institute addressed concepts, methodologies, and practical issues to consider when planning and conducting research on health promotion, disease prevention and health disparities, Winters said. She added that the institute focused on medically underserved areas and populations.

Twenty pairs of research partners from across the United States were selected to attend, and they developed a funding proposal throughout the week to submit to the National Institutes of Health.

Winters is one of four researchers from MSU's College of Nursing in partnerships with health care providers from the Center for Asbestos Related Disease in Libby conducting research regarding the health effects of exposure to asbestos. Her partner at the institute was Tanis Hernandez, a licensed clinical social worker and outreach coordinator at the Center for Asbestos Related Disease.

The institute was sponsored by the Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research, National Cancer Institute, National Institute on Drug Abuse, and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.
