Influenza Update
October 21, 2009
Last week, the number of students visiting the Student Health Service with symptoms of influenza rose to 124. Prior to this, the Health Service was seeing around 40 students per week, according to Jim Mitchell, director.
Based on laboratory testing early in the semester, these individuals are presumed to be ill with 2009 novel H1N1 influenza (also known as swine flu). The illness appears to have the symptoms typical for influenza and our impression is that most students are coping well, Mitchell said.
Mitchell recommended these hygiene practices to help avoid catching or spreading the flu: Wash your hands regularly with soap and water or an alcohol based hand sanitizer and cover your coughs and sneezes.
