A letter from President Gamble regarding recent hate-based activities
October 23, 2009
To the MSU community:
Recently we have seen a number of incidents, both in our community and on our campus, which appear to be hate-based activities. Such activities, whether they are demonstrations, literature drops or graffiti, threaten the sense of security and safety that we value so highly.
Our university policy is one that protects the rights of all to freedom of speech. That policy, however, also states that unlawful activities, which sometimes are part of demonstrations and rallies, will not be allowed.
The university believes that the response to hate speech should always be peaceful speech. The answer to individual violence should always be collective healing, and the answer to ignorance should always be education. We are a community that readily embraces a wide diversity of thought and culture, a university that places a high priority on inclusiveness.
President Geoff Gamble
