Science Saturdays for kids begin Nov. 14 at MSU

Montana State University's 2009-2010 Science Saturdays for kids program kicks off from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, in Studio 1080, the interactive multimedia center in the atrium of the MSU EPS Building. Kids aged 8 and up are invited to participate in free hands-on activities and discussions with MSU scientists and students.
On Nov. 14, MSU cell biologist Christa Merzdorf and her students will explore "What Are We Made Of?" Kids will look at cells through microscopes, play with models of DNA and explore genes. Merzdorf researches formation of the brain by studying frog and chick embryos. She says the biological processes that form a frog's nervous system are similar to those in humans, and that knowledge of the particular genes can help us understand why birth defects occur.
"Our goal for Science Saturdays is to show that science is based on questions, and that many of these questions are really fun and challenging to investigate," said Trevor Douglas, director of MSU's Center for Bio-Inspired NanoMaterials, which sponsors Science Saturdays along with MSU Extended University and Montana EPSCoR. "We want kids to have an afternoon to explore these big questions right along with MSU scientists and students."
Admission is free to Science Saturdays, but pre-registration is required. Enrollment is limited to 60 participants. To register, call (406) 994-6550 during MSU business hours.
