Online Native American Studies grad certificate program available in January

November 03, 2009
Montana State University is now accepting applications for an innovative online graduate certificate program in Native American Studies that begins in January.

The 12-credit online graduate certificate program in Native American Studies is believed to be the first such program in existence, according to Walter Fleming, head of the MSU Department of Native American Studies.

"We believe that there are students across the globe interested in graduate courses in Native American studies and this innovative offering fills that need," Fleming said.

Fleming said that students who complete 12 credits, or four three-credit courses online, will earn a graduate certificate in Native American Studies.

Initial spring 2010 offerings will include "Federal Indian Law and Policy" and "Native America: Dispelling the Myths." Future courses will include an American Indian art survey course.

Fleming said MSU plans to offer one or two Native American Studies courses online each semester. The program has a rolling application, which means that students can enroll at any time.

The MSU Department of Native American Studies recently received accreditation from the World Indigenous Nations Higher Education Consortium, the first mainstream non-indigenous controlled institution in the world to ever receive the designation.
