Shelterbelt workshops set Nov. 16-19 around Montana's Golden Triangle
November 03, 2009 -- MSU News Service
BOZEMAN - Fall meetings in Dutton, Chester, Cutbank, Great Falls, Shelby, and Valier will help landowners plan new shelterbelts and renovate existing ones. Participants will also have an opportunity to ask questions of Montana State University's tree specialist.
"The past two years have been harsh on trees in general, and shelterbelts in specific. With mountain pine beetle, spring sub-zero temperatures and drought, trees across the triangle area have taken quite a beating," said Mark Major, MSU Extension agent in Teton County.
MSU Extension agents from the Golden Triangle organized the meetings to give residents insight into how to manage their trees and make plans for improvements. Peter Kolb, MSU Extension Forestry Specialist, will discuss how to plan, renovate, and care for trees, especially those in shelterbelts.
"The meetings will be specifically on shelterbelts, but participants are invited to ask Dr. Kolb any questions about trees they have. From my experience, he is very knowledgeable about trees and provides extremely usable information for tree owners," Major said.
The workshop schedule is:
Monday, Nov. 16 -- 6 p.m. in the Cascade County Extension conference room at the Westgate Mall in Great Falls.
Tuesday, Nov. 17 -- 10 a.m. at the Dutton Legion Hall and 7 p.m. at the Valier Civic Center.
Wednesday, Nov. 18 -- 9 a.m. at the Cutbank voting center and 7 p.m. at Marias River Electric in Shelby.
Thursday, Nov. 19 -- 9 a.m. at the courtroom of the Liberty County Courthouse in Chester.
The workshops are free. For more information, landowners should contact their local Extension offices.
