Veterans' Day observances at the Museum of the Rockies, Nov. 11

November 05, 2009
Veteran's Day will be Military Appreciation Day at the Museum of the Rockies. All past and present military personnel are invited to tour the Museum free of charge from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Nov. 11. Dokken Nelson Funeral Service is sponsoring this free day.

Memories of World War II: Photos from the Archives of the Associated Press is a spectrum of photos from all theatres of war ranging from Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal's classic Iwo Jima flag-raising in 1945 to scores of pictures not seen in decades. Censorship delayed the release of many pictures and restricted caption information for years. The Museum will be supplementing the exhibit with artifacts from its collections that tell the story of the War from a Montana perspective.

The Museum will also observe Veterans' Day with staged readings from Studs Terkel's "The Good War," thanks to a generous contribution from the Charlie Russell Riders Foundation. Showing times are 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. in Hager Auditorium. Tickets are $5 for members and $7 for the public and go on sale Nov. 4 at the Museum's front desk. Seating is limited to 220 people for each show time.

The Pulitzer Prize winning "The Good War" detailed peoples' accounts of their involvement in World War II, from the battle rounds to the home front. No matter how difficult the time nor how sad the memories, most of the interviewees said that they were better off because of the experience.

"The Good War" will be directed by Joel Jahnke and features actors Keith Conway, Kent Davis, Lila Michael, Ben Trotter and Tim Williams. Kimberly Lunsford is the stage manger with sound design by Sam Heuck. Excerpts from the book will be enhanced with music and visual images from the period.

For more information, contact the Museum at 994-2251 or visit museumoftherockies.org.
