Oscar winner Brian van't Hul to discuss visual effects work on 'Coraline' Nov. 18 at MSU

November 09, 2009
Brian van't Hul, an Oscar winner and Montana State University film graduate, will lecture on visual effects work for the film "Coraline" at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, at the Procrastinator Theater in the MSU SUB.

Van't Hul is a Bozeman native who won an Academy Award for special effects on "King Kong."

Van't Hul has worked for Industrial Light and Magic, Sony Imageworks, Weta Digital and Disney doing various jobs covering miniature, live action and digital lighting, visual effects supervising, location plate photography and second unit directing. Most recently, van't Hul was the visual effects supervisor and one of six camera operators on the animated feature "Coraline," which was the first major stop-motion animated feature to be shot in stereoscopic 3-D. Van't Hul will discuss the challenges of shooting stop-motion, the concepts involved in shooting 3-D stereo and the issues it presents for doing post-production visual effects.

Van't Hul has also worked on "Nightmare Before Christmas," "Forrest Gump," all three "Lord of the Rings" films, "Master and Commander," "I, Robot," and "King Kong," for which he received a British Academy of Film and Television Arts award as well as an Oscar for Best Visual Effects in 2006.

Van't Hul's lecture is sponsored by the MSU School of Film and Photography. For more information, contact Paul Monaco, (406) 994-6225 or Vicki Miller, (406) 994-2484.
