Serves as President, Montana State University-Bozeman (1990-present).

Serves as President of Montana State University with campuses in Bozeman,
Billings, Havre and Great Falls (1994-present).

Serves on the Commission on Colleges of the Northwest Association of Schools
and Colleges.

Serves on the Board of Directors of the National Association of State Universities
and Land Grant Colleges, the oldest and largest higher education association.
As Historian:

Is currently under contract with Yale University Press for a book on the
historiography of western America.

Has served as Assistant, Associate and Full Professor of History at Montana
State University-Bozeman (1967-present)

Has authored or co-authored eight books, including Montana: A Contemporary
Profile (1997); James J. Hill: Empire Builder of the Northwest (1996);
The American West: A Twentieth Century History (1989) a History Book Club
main selection; The Battle for Butte: Mining and Politics on the Northern
Frontier (1981) winner of the Emil and Kathleen Sick Award for Western
History; and Montana - a History of Two Centuries (1976, 1991) a
standard text on the topic.

Has authored over twenty articles and book chapters, presented papers to
numerous learned societies and written book reviews in a dozen academic
journals and several popular journals.

Won the Western History Association’s Oscar O. Winter Award for the best
article of the year, 1990.

Was named an outstanding alumnus of both Washington State University and
Gonzaga University.
