About the Center
**************************************************
As of August 1, 2006, the CRCHC is officially closed. Many activities
and projects begun under the CRCHC are continuing. We will continue to
maintain and update the CRCHC website for the 2006-2007 academic year.
If you have questions regarding the CRCHC please contact Dr. Clarann Weinert
at 1-888-375-1317 or 406 994-6036 or cweinert@montana.edu.

The rural west is characterized by an agricultural economic
base, wide open spaces, sparse population in many areas, limited access to health care,
few academic settings, and notable geographic distance between nurse
investigators. Here at Montana State University we take the leading
role in rural nursing health research in the western United States.
The Center for Research on
Chronic Health Conditions in Rural Dwellers (CRCHC) was developed to
address issues associated with the prevention and management of chronic
illness within the rural context of the west.
The broad aims of the CRCHC are to build research capacity and
infrastructure, to create linkages between researchers, and to fund
studies to advance nursing science and reduce the impact of chronic health
conditions on individuals and the economy.
The CRCHC received initial funding from NIH/NINR as an
exploratory P20 center (1P20NR07790-01)
in August 2001 and additional funding from the SC Ministry
Foundation. Since
that time, we have worked to develop both nurse scientists and nursing
science through our different program areas. Through the
Pilot Program, we have funded thirteen
pilot projects
involving over twenty-five Center Investigators. We have also
incorporated several
Affiliates with whom we share common interests. Our
Center Investigators are a
newfound focus of our efforts, and we invite you to learn more about their
dissemination
efforts and our ongoing directions. Our focus on
chronic illness provides many opportunities including research on prevention
to improve quality of life, decreasing costs of healthcare, and making
healthcare personalized, easier to implement, and proactive.
