Abstract: Motivational Interviewing to Promote Sustained Breast-feeding with the Northern Plains Healthy Start Mothers and Infants

The purpose of this pilot study is to explore the feasibility of using Motivational Interviewing to promote sustained Breast-feeding by increasing a mother’s intent to breast-feed for six months and increasing her Breast-feeding self-efficacy.  A longitudinal experimental two-group design with repeated measures was selected to explore the feasibility of using Motivational Interviewing to promote sustained Breast-feeding.  Two reservations that participate in the Northern Plains Healthy Start program with a convenience sample of 40 Breast-feeding mothers,> 19 years of age will participate.  Breast-feeding behavior will be confirmed at each visit by infant test weights and fecal oligosaccharide levels.  Levels of infant health will be measured by maternal report and by measuring urinary cytokine levels.  If mothers in the intervention group breast-feed longer than mothers in the comparison group; then Motivational Interviewing may be useful as a strategy to test in a comprehensive intervention plan to promote longer Breast-feeding rates since this population’s rates are well below the national rate.

Purpose:  This pilot study will test the feasibility and utility of conducting an asthma screening program--using both questionnaires and spirometry--for American Indian/Alaskan Native children in two Northern Plains Tribal communities.
