Born into a life of high adventure, Mike Kippenhan’s love for Art Direction, Graphic Design and teaching are evident throughout his work. Being a part of a dynamic and ever changing field, Mike participates as a creator, teacher, critic and viewer. These shifting roles have allowed him to better understand his work and approach to problem solving, how he communicates and expresses ideas and concepts from the literal to the abstract. Ultimately he brings his passion for design and his desire to create into each project so that clients and students will find their own voice and vision reflected.

His work has appeared in Eye, AIGA Journal, Emigre, The Northwest Design Awards and The 100 Show as well as a traveling exhibition of design educators I Profess. He has worked for clients such as Nike, Adidas, Intel, Pacific General Electric,Tektronix and a host high tech companies, small businesses companies and not-for-profit organizations. Mike's education includes a MFA in Visual Communication from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a BA in Graphic Design from Colorado State University. He has taught at Portland State University, The Pacific Northwest College of Art and the University of Ulsan, South Korea.

When not designing, Mike can be found in pursuit of Tiger Beetles and other insects. He has numerous scientific publications and illustrations that reflect his hobby. In addition, he has formally described three new species of Tiger Beetles from Ecuador and Colombia.
