Summer Opportunities

U-DOC Program for high school juniors and seniors who want to become doctors and dentists needs pre-med and medical students to be paid mentors as resident assistants (evenings and weekends) and teaching assistants (during the week). RAs are on from 5 pm to 8 am in the residence halls and both days and nights on weekends. TAs work as scheduled in anatomy, physiology, psychology, public health/microbiology and biochemistry as needed. The program runs from June 18 to July 29, 2006. Due to the current funding situation this program may not be available Summer 2007.

Summer Medical and Dental Education Program

Research Opportunities
Columbia University/Barnard College now offers a summer research program to a select group of motivated undergraduate students. You may apply if you are a US citizen or permanent resident and currently a sophomore, junior, or non-graduating senior at a four-year college or university in the United States, Puerto Rico or other US territory. Students work full-time in a research lab and receive a $4,000 stipend and housing. The Amgen Scholars' Program runs for ten weeks, beginning the Tuesday after Memorial Day. All Amgen Scholars will participate in a conference in California sponsored by the Amgen Foundation. The University of California San Francisco Summer Research Training Program (SRTP) is a 9-week summer research and professional development program for students interested in careers as researchers and physician scientists. The program is designed for students in their sophomore or junior years of college. Participants receive intensive research laboratory experience and abundant mentorship. In addition, they participate in a variety of career development programs, scientific seminars, and specific career enhancement opportunities. Financial support includes a $3,000 stipend, dormitory-style housing, and travel funds to and from San Francisco for students who are not eligible for support from their home institution.  Application deadline is February 1, 2007.  The brochure and application are available online.  For additional information, please email or call the SRTP office at 415-514-0840.

UT Southwestern Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences - Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Program runs from June 4 through August 10, 2007.  Participants spend full time on individual research projects in laboratories of UT Southwestern Graduate School faculty members and will present seminars on their research.  Most areas of modern cell biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, immunology, microbiology and biophysics are represented.  Participants will be selected based on letters of reference, course work, and experience.  Stipend for the ten-week program is $4,000 ($5,250 if the student requires housing).  For more information and to download an application go to the website or emailApplication deadline is February 9, 2007.

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program at the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine (OU-COM) provides a wide variety of summer research opportunities for undergraduate students interested in careers in medicine or biomedical research. Participants in this program work in an active research laboratory under the guidance of a faculty member, and are exposed to the challenges, excitement and satisfaction of research. Selection is based on academic records and the appropriateness of applicants scientific interests. Students about to begin their senior year of college studies are preferred, but promising juniors and recent graduates will be considered. Participants are provided with room, board and a $1750 stipend. Eight undergraduate credit hours in biology are also available tuition-free to all program participants. In addition, those program participants who meet minimum requirements for admission to OU-COM, including having taken the MCAT, will be offered an opportunity to interview during the summer. Summer Medical Research Training Program/Baylor College of Medicine, Houston Texas - The SMART Program is a nine-week summer Biomedical Research Program which intertwines frontier-level research and educational activities designed for a diverse group of outstanding undergraduates from across the nation.  A compensation package of approximately $4,000 will be paid to accepted  participants.  The application deadline is February 1st.  For additional information, contact Gayle R. The National Cancer Institute conducts and supports research, training, health information dissemination, and other programs with respect to the cause, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of cancer, rehabilitation from cancer, and the continuing care of cancer patients and the families of cancer patients.  NCI-Frederick encourages students to participate in student internship programs, including the Cancer Research Training Award (CRTA), theWerner H. Kirsten Student Intern Program (SIP), and NCI at Frederick Undergraduate Intern Program.

National Institute of Health (NIH) Summer Student Research and Training Opportunities

New York University Summer Institute:  The Howard Hughes Honors Summer Institute for undergraduates will afford undergraduates the opportunity to engage in research and to live on the University's campus.  Applications are encouraged from those undergraduates majoring in or planning to major in the natural sciences, computer science, or mathematics, and who are interested in the areas of bioinformatics, genomics, or computational biology.  Prior research experience is not essential.  Underrepresented minority students and women are strongly encouraged to apply. The program runs from May 29 through July 27, 2007.  Participants will receive a $2,000 stipend and a $1,000 research grant for supplies.  Also, room and board on the NYU campus is included.  Additional information and application can be accessed from their website. The Sackler Institute of Graduate Biomedical Sciences at the New York University School of Medicine offers a Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP)  The purpose of this program is to give highly qualified students, who are interested in pursuing careers in the biomedical sciences (MD/PhD), the opportunity to conduct research while exposed to the excitement of an academic medical environment at a major research center. Students must have completed their sophomore year in college by the start of the program, taken courses in biology, chemistry and mathematics, and preferably have had some research experience. Participants will receive a stipend of $3,000, round-trip travel expenses to New York City and free housing an NYU facility. The program begins on June 4, 2007 and extends through August 3, 2007. This program offers the pre-medical student an introduction to research methodology, patient treatment, and ethical issues in medicine as well as exposure to a broad spectrum of health care providers within a large community teaching hospital. The dates of the research program are June 4th to August 11th; the Application deadline is February 9, 2007. Qualifications: Pre-Med students completing their junior or senior year by May 2007. Fellowship award of $1,000 for a ten-week period. Parking and dormitory housing is provided as needed. Students must bear their own travel expenses as well as lodging and meals. The University of Cincinnati College of Medicine is offering two summer programs for undergraduate students this year.  The Summer Premedical Enrichment Program (SPEP) and the Summer Research Scholars (SRS) are both open to students who have completed at least two years of college.  Both programs provide a stipend, housing, partial board and transportation to Cincinnati.  Applications and additional information can be found on their website.  Click on "prospective students" and then "summer programs" to obtain information about these programs.  Application deadline is February 1, 2007. Program Dates for SPEP are June 17th-July 28th. Program Dates for SRS are June 17th-August 11th.

The University of Cincinnati Physician Scientist Training Program sponsors a summer internship for talented undergraduates who plan a career as a physician-scientist. The application deadline is February 1, 2007 but applications will be accepted until March 1. University of Pittsburgh - Research Experiences for Undergraduates. University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine - Pitt-Summer Program for Undergraduate Research Growth. Ten week, NIH-supported program for students to conduct original research under the supervision of faculty members of the Department of Pharmacology. Salary: $5,000. Eligible students in chemistry, math, physics, computer science and engineering majors who have completed their sophomore or junior years. Clinical Opportunities - Full time and summer
Chester Summer Scholars Program - The Edward M. Chester, M.D. Summer Scholars Program awards fifteen collegiate undergraduate students the opportunity to spend ten weeks over the summer in clinical laboratory research settings at MetroHealth Medical Center. There are also opportunities for observation of surgery, hospital rounds, and other experiences at MetroHealth. Howard Hughes Medical Institute Summer Program in Undergraduate Research (SPUR) - Ten week program (May 29, 2007-August 3, 2007) of full time student research on various biomedical related projects. Students work as part of a research team, with mentors from the College of Arts and Sciences, School of Medicine, and the School of Engineering. Students also participate in extracurricular activities that include weekly seminars and one day workshops which involve visits to the Cleveland Museum of Natural History (CMNH) and the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. Pediatrics Program in Summer Undergraduate Research - The Department of Pediatrics at Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital and Case Western Reserve University provides a program for undergraduates to obtain experience in biomedical and psychosocial research relating to pediatrics. Undergraduates who have completed their first year of study from any US college or university are eligible to apply. Students' responsibilities will include full time work on the research project for 10 weeks, as well as weekly attendance at a meeting in which students will describe their projects to the other students in the program. A stipend is provided. Applications, including candidates' personal statements, letters of recommendation and GPA are due March 1, 2007. Applicants are selected on a competitive basis. Summer Undergraduate Research in Pharmacology at Case School of Medicine - "Hands on" research experience for sophomores and juniors in molecular pharmacology. In addition to research, weekly seminars are presented to acquaint the students with the broad range of research projects in the Pharmacology Department. Program dates: May 21, 2007 - August 10, 2007. Stipends of $2800 provided by American Society for Pharmacology and Therapeutics and from HHMI-sponsored Summer Program in Undergraduate Research awarded to all participants. Summer Undergraduate Research Program in Physiology at Case Western Reserve University - The Department of Physiology and Biophysics offers a 10 week summer research traineeship to 20 undergraduates interested in biomedical research. Participants are assigned to labs and work together with faculty to obtain hands-on research experience in the life sciences. Program is designed for outstanding students in biology, chemistry, physics or related disciplines. Stipends of $2500 are provided; on-campus housing is available. Application decisions are made by January 31st although applications will be accepted and decisions made after this date. Interested in International Health Electives?  Child Family Health International offers several programs for medical students and pre-medical students 21 and over. Most programs include clinical rotations, language training (where available) and home-stay accommodations.

All programs are offered for 4 or 8 weeks beginning on Saturday and ending on Saturday. 

See the Child Family Health International web site for detailed information and an on-line application form. If interested in applying, do so as soon as possible. The applications are accepted first-come first serve, and students should apply up to 6 or 7 months in advance for summer programs. Decisions are based on the application and two reference emails from your University or professional contacts.
