Ecocide and Resistance Conference
April 1-2, 2010
Abstract and Call for Papers
Native American Studies graduate students at Montana State University are seeking papers or panels from other NAS/AIS/IS faculty and students (graduate and undergraduate) exploring community-based strategies for countering environmental threats. Disruptions to the natural order affect the viability of all people, but indigenous peoples’ lives and lands are differentially affected. Furthermore, the protection of land, water, and air is intertwined with indigenous concerns over cultural, physical, and spiritual health. To ensure that future generations can survive and flourish on their own terms and in conditions consistent with their own sacred philosophies, Native peoples and their advocates must educate and act before crises arise, instead of in the midst of them.
Possible Topics (not an exhaustive list!)
Indigenous responses to or thoughts on:
- Climate change
- Sustainability
- Food, energy and water security
- Collaborative, community-based solutions to environmental problems
- Legal, political, or regulatory (structural) solutions/obstructions
- The green economy in Indian country
- Indigenous responses (social, political, scientific, philosophical, spiritual…) to environmental change
