This was an unfortunate story to have come across. Tyler’s story has affected many people, and thankfully has helped our nation realize what bullying can do to an individual. After his death, and the death of other gay teens around this time, it was apparent that constant taunting of a person’s sexual orientation can lead to horrible things, and in Tyler’s case that was suicide. Last September, Tyler jumped from the George Washington Bridge after his roommate at Rutgers University had exposed Tyler kissing another man in their dorm room, this encounter was video streamed over the internet without Tyler’s knowledge.
Recently, his parents have come forth on campus at Rutgers, and delivered their message that “The change that you want to see in the world and in your school begins with you." They are attending benefits and are in full support of cyber bullying being put to an end. Although they are applauding the school for its compassion and services, there are still legal papers being filed against them.
Reading this article made my heart hurt for the Clementi family, I can’t even begin to imagine how his parents are feeling, sending their son off to college with the hopes that everything works out for him, and then realizing it’s too late for them to help. It’s also hard to believe that someone in as close proximity as his roommate, could violate his privacy and treat him that way. As sad as Tyler’s story is, it brings peace of mind to know that many supporters are standing by his case and wanting to fix the problem of bullying against gay teens.
