Resources


To address the variety of needs across campus, the DAO provides a spectrum of resources
for both students, staff and faculty. Feedback and suggestions are always welcome - if you
have any suggestions about events or additional programming that couls be offered, please
feel free to contact the office.

Financial Resources and Information

Scholarship Information

The DAO has compiled a list of resources for all MSU students, as well as listings of national aid that is available to students of underrepresented backgrounds. Currently, the booklet is being edited, but contact the office for more information.

Financial Aid Workshop

Please join us for out Financial Aid 101 workshop, scheduled for February 2, 2009, from
2-4 pm. Scholarship information will be available, and a representative from the Office of Financial Aid will outline the basics of FAFSA and other finacial aid procedures.

Undergraduate Mini-grants

In an effort to support and encourage undergraduate student research, the DAO sponsors undergraduate mini-grants. Grant awards range in amount, and are awarded in the form of reimbursement.

  • Street Stories- Ordinary people intrigue us just as much as celebrities do: everday life stories that connect you to the wider world. Street Stories is a weekly half hour
    program devoted to social documentaries. You'll hear stories and experiences from far
    and wide, and from people who might live next door, or on a different continent.
  • The Philosophy Podcast- A periodic showcase of the world's greatest philosophy, from thinkers such as Plato, Descarte, Nietszche and more!
  • NPR: No Ordinary People - Hear from some of the most interesting and provocative
    people who appeared on NPR's daily news magazine, Day to Day.
  • NPR: News and Notes- From newsmakers to performers, health to finance,
    News & Notes explores fascinating issues and people from an African American perspective.
  • NPR: Justice Talking - award-winning radio that engages listeners in timely,
    refreshingly honest debates on the current legal battles that capture our nation's attention.
  • Opportunity Radio - A social justice podcast dedicated to exploring the state of opportunity in America.  We interview an eclectic mix of advocates, researchers, activists, and ordinary Americans to find out where opportunity is expanding, and
    where our country is failing in its historic promise of opportunity for all.
  • The Latino Book and Family Festival- The Latino Book & Family Festival was launched
    in 1997 in Los Angeles to promote literacy, culture & education & to provide people of
    all ages & backgrounds the opportunity to celebrate diversity of the multicultural communities in a festival atmosphere.
  • Radio in Black and White- A weekly, one hour, positive, free flowing, solutions oriented conversation about multi-racial, multi-ethnic relationships. Hosts, guests and live
    callers discuss new models emerging in business, community life, health care, law, education and faith. The program is designed to develop new language and
    perspective on racially driven content, giving our community an oppportunity to
    have an ongoing, thoughtful, honest dialogue about race and diversity.
  • RNW: Network Europe- A unique example of European co-operation, produced by the continent's leading international broadcasters and reflecting the diversity of European society and voices. When Radio Netherlands Worldwide takes its turn at coordinating
    the programme, your host will be Richard Walker.
  • The American Diversity Projectis an annual week-long documentary project where student and professional photojournalists come together to document a small town.
    The above link takes you to this year's project, filmed in May 2008.
  • Voices of Diversity - An hour-long public affairs talk show produced by volunteers at KBCS. The program airs Wednesdays at 6:00 p.m. on KBCS 91.3 FM in Bellevue, WA. Voices of Diversity seeks to tell the untold stories in our community as well as
    celebrate the diversity of cultural expression found in the Northwest. Guests on
    Voices of Diversity address issues such as racism, sexism, and homophobia, as well as
    the realities of life for vulnerable populations like immigrants and homeless people.
    Voices of Diversity seeks to literally give voice to those not often heard on the airwaves, and to that end, trains community members in radio skills and independent
    journalism.
  • Q: The Podcast - Q is Canada's liveliest arts, culture and entertainment magazine.
    It's a smart and surprising tour through personalities and cultural issues that matter
    to Canadians. Hosted by Jian Ghomeshi, with his trademark wit and spontaneity, Q covers pop culture and high arts alike, with forays into the most provocative and compelling cultural trends. Q brings you big names, big ideas, and those paving the
    way in Canada's cultural community. Q is your cultural intervention!

Podcasts are available on cd for check out at the DAO, but most are also available on itunes.

Diversity Panels comprised of students and members of the community to facilitate class discussions. Panels can be tailored to meet the needs of specific class discussions
(i.e. Psychology of Prejudice, Orientation Leaders training) or general discussions about race, class, religion, nationalism etc. Advance notice is required.  

Thursday Afternoon Forums – monthly forums for staff and graduate students to present research and topics related to diversity.
 
Diversity Dialogue seminars - providing facilitated discussion over a four week period on a number of diversity related issues.

The DAO also provides contact information for other resources both on and off campus.
