Tunnel of Oppression

Volunteer Information:

The Tunnel of Oppression will be an interactive tunnel built in the SUB Ballrooms with attached room exhibits created by various student groups – each exhibit explores different kinds of oppression we face in our society.
We are in need to a variety of volunteers to help make the Tunnel of Oppression a success yet again this year!

The Tunnel will be open February 26 and 27 : 12pm - 4pm, and from 6-8, with self-guided tour hours being 10-11:30 am and 4-5:30pm on both days.

SUNDAY FEBRUARY 24 Tunnel Construction:
We need a people to help with the construction of the actual tunnel that people will walk through to get to the approximately 20 exhibits that are being created by groups, offices and individuals here on campus. This year, the tunnel will have pallet walls. We will need volunteers to help situate the pallets as they arrive, and use drills to connect pallets to eachother, and set up the walls. Once the walls are set up, we will need people to help cover the rooms and the walls as necessary and add the roof of the tunnel. Construction involves between 300-400 pallets.
Shifts: 12-3pm, 3-6pm
Refreshments will be provided for volunteers
Please email the DAO to sign up
Groups interested in signing up, please fill out the GROUP VOLUNTEER FORM

Volunteer Tour Guides:
We need volunteers to give tours through the Tunnel on Tuesday February 26, and Wednesday February 27.
The tour guides will act much like a museum tour guide as they bring groups through the tunnel and explaining each exhibit (narratives for each exhibit will be printed and carried, tour guides are NOT required to memorize them). Tours will take approximately an hour, and will be staggered 15 minutes apart so multiple groups will be in the tunnel during each hour.  There are numerous time slots to volunteer for; we only ask that you sign up for at least three hours during the event. Volunteering also requires one hour of training and practice on Monday, February 25 at 7:00pm once the exhibits are completed. This totals a minimum of four hours of volunteering before and during the event. Refreshments will be provided at the training.

If you are interested in volunteering, please fill in the form available here and return it to the DAO. You can sign up for shifts here.

Volunteer Table Staff:
Table staff is needed to man the information and check in table during the hours that the Tunnel is open, connecting groups to scheduled tour guides and answering questions. These are half hour shifts, and we ask that each volunteer sign up for two hours total. This also includes a half hour of training/orientation on Monday Feb. 24 at 7:30pm. Please email the DAO with interest – you can sign up for time slots here.

THURSDAY FEBRUARY 27 Tunnel Breakdown
This will be similar to the tunnel construction – we will deconstructing the tunnel and returning pallets to the businesses that loaned them to us. Shifts will be from 3-5pm and from 5-7pm. Refreshments will be provided. Please email the DAO to sign up
Groups interested in signing up, please fill out the GROUP VOLUNTEER FORM
