  • Teach Introduction to Machine Design and Introduction to Mechanical Engineering, perform research on the mechanical response of biofilms, shape memory alloys, and materials under dynamic loading events.

2005 – 2007 Team Leader, Mechanical and Dynamic Testing, Materials Science and Technology, Los Alamos National Laboratory

  • Supervisor of personnel, technical work, safety authorization and budgetary concernsfor a high profile team in the Nuclear Materials Technology Division. The personnel on this team utilize a quasi-static load frame, a split Hopkinson pressure bar, and 40 mm gas gun to interrogate the mechanical response of actinide materials, namely plutonium.The yearly budget is ~$4M.

2001- 2005 Technical Staff Member, Nuclear Materials Science, Los Alamos National Laboratory

  • Principal Investigator on three projects investigating the thermomechanical response of plutonium, combined total over $1 M.
  • Principal Investigator for $600k project to characterize physical properties of plutonium as a function of age.
  • Subject Matter Expert for following experimental techniques: Quasi-static thermomechanical Testing, Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar, Resonant Ultrasound Spectroscopy, Nano-Indentation, Optical Profilometry, Precision Immersion Density, Differential Scanning Calorimetry, and Push-rod Dilatometry, and optical microscopy.
  • Provide technical expertise for nuclear weapon component development and
  • manufacturing.

2000-2001 Post-Doctoral Associate, Los Alamos National Laboratory

  • Characterized the high strain rate deformation of Ni-Ti in both tension and compression and analyzed the effect of the phase transformation on damage nucleation and growth.

1992-1999 Graduate Research Assistant, Aerospace Engineering, Texas A&M University

  • Thermo-mechanical characterization of NiTi for the development of shape memory alloy constitutive models, including the design of testing hardware and software.
  • Design and development of experimental equipment for thermally cycling shape memory alloys under constant tension and torsion, including design of test apparatus and generating data acquisition and control software.
  • Damage evaluation and microstructural analysis of a titanium Metal Matrix Composite, including: mechanical test development, specimen preparation, elevated temperature testing, post-test evaluation of microstructure utilizing optical microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy, and Energy Dispersion Spectrometry.
  • Experimental studies on the oxidation of titanium utilizing Scanning Electron Microscopy and microprobe analysis.
  • In-situ measurement of crack development in the oxidized surface of titanium utilizing a tensile stage mounted in an Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope.
  • Identification of dynamic properties for an SMA/elastomer composite including specimen design, fabrication, experimental characterization and parameter identification.
  • Co-authored successful DURIP grant from AFOSR to renovate the Active Materials and Materials/Structures Laboratories.

  • Worked with National Instruments personnel to create teaching modules and classroom experiments that teach both solid mechanics and LabView to undergraduate engineering students.

1998 Testing Agreement with Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett and Dunner, L.L.P.

  • Developed testing protocol and performed mechanical tests on Shape Memory Alloy eyeglass frames for use in a patent dispute case.
