Graduate Students:

Dr. Brooker will be accepting applications for graduate students who will begin their studies in Fall of 2017. The MSU Department of Psychology offers a Ph.D. in Psychological Science that is intended to fully prepare candidates for a research career. Students who are highly motivated, inquisitive, and interested in research on early socioemotional development are encouraged to apply. Experience with psychophysiological measures is not required, but preference will be given to applicants with strong academic records and demonstrated interests in developmental science, psychophysiology, or neuroscience.

Undergraduate Research Assistants:Students Working

The DOME lab is always seeking responsible undergraduate students to assist with our research. We offer opportunities to assist in participant recruitment, work with child and adult participants, be an active part of data collection, enter and analyze data, and gain exposure to the processes that fuel Psychological Science! Please make sure that you read the description of our research and the requirements/qualifications listed below before you contact us.

Description of Research:

Research interests in our lab include developmental affective neuroscience, individual differences in emotional reactivity and regulation, interplay between biological and environmental factors of development, and the effects of context on emotional behavior and physiological reactivity during the toddler and pre-Kindergarten years. The current longitudinal studies are designed to explore the roles of developing cognitive and emotional qualities in children and parents. Each study contains elements that probe biological and familial influences on development in both children and parents during children's early years. Undergraduate research assistants will be involved in preparing materials for these visits, assisting families during visits to the DOME lab, and aiding with the coding, scoring, and entry of data. Research assistants will also be trained in contemporary temperament-based assessments and will learn to discriminate between and code affective behaviors in young children.

Method of Compensation:

Undergraduate research assistants may apply for PSYX 490 course credit or on a volunteer basis. Those students interested in a for-credit opportunity should read through the attached syllabus. Participation in the laboratory provides a valuable experience and reference base for those considering graduate studies in psychology or neuroscience or for students who will be applying to medical school.

Requirements/Qualifications:

Because of the nature and training involved with the study, we ask for a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 and a minimum commitment of at least 2 semesters (although the majority of our undergraduates stay on the project longer than the minimum requirement). Students should plan to spend 6-8 hours per week involved in lab-related activities, including a required one-hour weekly lab/coding meeting.

Undergraduate Independent Studies or Senior Honors Theses:

Opportunities are available for completing independent studies, undergraduate scholars projects, or senior honors theses in the lab. Please discuss this opportunity with Dr. Brooker well in advance of application or project proposal deadlines. Preference will be given to students who are already working in the DOME lab. In all cases, students are required to work in the lab during the time of their project; this work will include participation as a research assistant on the larger project(s) in addition to thesis work.

Letters of Recommendation:

I am happy to write letters of recommendation for students who have worked in my lab or who I have gotten to know well in one of my courses. Keep in mind that a letter of recommendation will only be useful to you if it contains details that are specific to you and are best-suited for the experience or program to which you are applying. Thus, I will be able to write the best letters for students whom I have come to know well. If you wish for me to write a letter for you, contact me as soon as possible to ask me if I think that I can write a strong letter for you. This should be well before the letter is due (preferably 2-4 weeks in advance). Send or bring me a completed Letter of Recommendation Request Form. 

If I agree to write a letter for you, make sure that you provide me with the information that is relevant to your application (for example, your personal statement, CV, GRE scores, etc.). You can also include papers that you wrote for me in class or documentation of your work in the lab. If you will need multiple, similar letters of recommendation, request all of the letters at once. Include addressed and stamped envelopes (if needed) and clear deadlines for each letter.
