Every year, each state submits a report to the U.S. Department of Education detailing the subject areas in which it faces a shortage of teachers. While this is certainly not a guarantee of employment in any particular area, it can give teacher candidates an idea of what endorsements might be most marketable in a particular state.

In its 2017-18 report, the state of Montana has listed the following academic subject areas as disciplines facing a teacher shortage:

  • Art
  • Career and Technical Education
  • English
  • Library
  • Mathematics
  • Music
  • School Counselor
  • School Psychologist
  • Science
  • Special Education
  • World Languages

Students interested in teaching outside of Montana may wish to consult the full federal report.
