Curriculum and Instruction

Welcome to the web site for Curriculum and Instruction (C&I). C&I undergraduate programs at Montana State University lead to initial teacher certification and are generally organized around programs in Elementary Education (Grades K-8) and Secondary Education (Grades 5-12).

Elementary and secondary teacher education programs at Montana State University are accredited by the State of Montana and the Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC).

Elementary Education

The Department of Education offers teacher preparation programs for students seeking teaching careers in grades kindergarten through eight (K-8). The programs are designed to provide a basic general education and the breadth of experience in the sciences, language arts, humanities, social studies, art, music, mathematics, and health enhancement necessary for a classroom teacher at these grade levels.

Secondary Education

The Department of Education offers teacher education programs for students seeking teaching careers in specific subject areas for grades five through twelve. Most of the programs are inter-departmental, with the exception of General Science Broadfield, Social Studies Broadfield, and Technology Education Broadfield, which are totally administered and housed within the Department of Education. Therefore, students who wish to complete any of the aforementioned majors will enroll in the Department of Education, whereas students who wish to complete any of the other majors will enroll in the departments offering the teaching options in their chosen areas.

Technology Education

The Technology Education (TE) program at Montana State University is a multi-disciplinary program of study designed to develop technological literacy through the study of past, present, and future technological systems and their impacts on society. Program content is influenced by the Standards for Techological Literacy, as published by the International Technology Education Association (2000). The TE Broadfield Teaching option is designed for individuals wishing to teach Technology Education at the junior high or high school level. There is a critical nationwide shortage of TE teachers thus individuals selecting this career have little difficulty in securing a job as a teacher. The Industry Option provides students the opportunity to develop skills in a variety of areas plus the flexibility to choose courses that allow them to further develop in-depth skills for their chosen career path.
