MSU Testing Service offers the following academic exams, listed here in alphabetical order.
You can register for exams by contacting the MSU Testing Service, unless otherwise
specified below.

ACT Compass
This computer-adaptive testing system helps place students into appropriate courses and
maximizes the information postsecondary schools need to ensure student success. The exam
tests mathematics, writing and reading skills. Fee: $25. For more information, please call

ACT Residual and ACT Writing
The ACT Residual is for individuals who were unable to take the ACT exam on the national test
dates. The ACT exam is a national college admission examination that consists of subject area
tests in English, mathematics, reading, and science. ACT residual test results are accepted by
Montana University System institutions only. Practice tests are available at ACT websites. MUS now requires the writing test. Fee: ACT without Writing $30, and ACT with Writing $50. For more information, please call our office at 406-994-6984

Correspondence and Distance Learning exams
A variety of correspondence and distance learning exams are offered at MSU. Please contact us
for more information. Fee: $10 for current enrolled MSU-Bozeman students, $30 for
non-enrolled students. $10/per hour for every hour needed after the first hour, for both MSU students and non students.

CLEP - College Level Examination Program
The College Level Examination Program, or CLEP, shortens your path to a college degree by
allowing you to take course credits on subjects you already know. It can also assist you into
taking advanced courses. There are 35 CLEP exams to choose from. Effective July 1, 2008,

DAT - Dental Admission Test
This exam is required for admission into dental schools. Paper test. Cost: $170. Offered
Saturdays Only. You must register for this exam through the American Dental Association:

GED - General Educational Development
This examination is the high school equivalency diploma test. Cost: $55 pre-paid (fees
established by the State of Montana.)

• Applicants 17 years of age or older must provide Testing Service with:
  • Official School Withdrawal Document
  • Official School Withdrawal Document with Approval to take GED Exam for an
    applicant out of school less than 90 days.
  • Original Letter of Approval indicating applicant's high school class has been graduated.
  • Original Letter of Approval indicating applicant has not attended school out of state and has been advised of local in-school options.
• Applicants 16 years of age, under special circumstances, may apply for a waiver with the following documentation:
  • A completed, signed, and notarized 16 Year Old Waiver Application Form with required school documentation attached demonstrating consensus of the applicant, school officials, and applicant's parent/legal guardian that the GED program is considered in the best interest of the applicant.
  • Original letter, on official letterhead, signed by Adult Basic Education (ABE) Director certifying applicant has been enrolled in GED classes and is academically prepared for the GED Exam.
  • Letter of documentation, on official letterhead, establishing applicant's need to obtain a GED at age 16 from a higher education admissions officer, an employer requiring the GED, or a military recruiting official.
• Retesting: a $14 charge is applied to retest for the Language Arts/Writing section of the exam and a $7/each charge is applied for each of the Language Arts/Reading, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies sections that need to be retaken
  • A one-month waiting period is required before an applicant may retake the GED. A waiting period of three months is required for any subsequent retests.
  • Retests must be administered in a test form not previously taken by the examinee.
  • Retests may not be administered in a subtest section prior to completion of the entire test battert unless requested in writing by the GED chief or alternate examiner.
  • GED candidates who previously attained a high school equivalency credential may retest if higher scores are required for employment or admission to a postsecondary institution. Retesting for this purpose requires approval from the state GED administrator and candidates mus show proof that retesting is necessary.

GRE - Graduate Records Examination, and GRE Subject Tests
The GRE is required for entry into many graduate school programs. It measures critical thinking, analytical writing, verbal reasoning, and quantitative reasoning skills that have been acquired over a long period of time and that are not related to any specific field of study. The GRE can be taken once per calendar month or up to 5 times per year. GRE Subject Tests gauge undergraduate achievement in Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Literature in English; Mathematics; Physics and Psychology. Effective July1, 2007, Computer Test Fee: $140.

New Deadline: GRE examinees must reschedule or cancel no later than 10 full days before their appoinment (not including the dayof the test or the day of the appointment. Example: The deadling to reschedule a Friday appointment is Monday of the previous week. New Rescheduling Fee: $50. New Partial Refund Amount: A GRE examinee who cancels an appointment by the deadline will receive a partial refund equivalent to half of the original test fee. Fee Reduction Voucher Program: The GRE Fee Waiver Program will be replace with a GRE Fee Reduction Program. Examinees should contact their school's financial aid office for information. Score Reinstatement: An examinee who cancels GRE scores at test center can have them reinstated by submitting a written request and $30 fee to ETS within 60 days after the test date. MAT - Miller Analogies Test for Analytical Thinkers
The Miller Analogies Test (MAT) is a high-level mental ability test requiring the solution of problems stated as analogies. Available as paper or computer exam. Cost: $75. For more information, please call out office at 406-994-6984 regarding testing hours and study material.

MCAT - Medical College Admission Test
Almost all U.S. medical schools require this exam for entry into their programs. Medical college admission committees consider MCAT scores as part of their admission decision process. You must register for this exam through the American Association of Medical Colleges: www.aamc.org/students/mcat/

OAT - Optometry Admission Test
The Optometry Admission Test is a standardized examination designed to measure general academic ability and comprehension of scientific information. The OAT is sponsored by the Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry for applicants seeking admission to an optometry program. All schools and colleges of optometry in the United States, and the University of Waterloo, Canada require the OAT. Paper test. Offered Saturdays Only. PCAT - Pharmacy College Admission Test
The Pharmacy College Admission Test (PCAT), an exam developed by PsychCorp, a brand of Harcourt Assessment, Inc. is a specialized test that helps identify qualified applicants to pharmacy colleges. It measures general academic ability and scientific knowledge necessary for the commencement of pharmaceutical education. The PCAT is constructed specifically for colleges of pharmacy. Paper Test. Praxis I: Pre-Professionals Skills Test
The Praxis Series Assessments provide tests as part of their teaching licensing certification process. Praxis I measures basic academic skills. The full exam consists of three tests: reading, writing or math. You can take the tests individually, or you can take the PPST Combined, which incorporates all three tests into one 4 1/2 hour long exam.Computer tests. Cost for taking tests individually: $145 for three tests; $110 for two tests; $75 for one test. PPST Combined Cost: $125. A rescheduling fee of $15 will be applied per rescheduled test. Re-testing is available once per calendar month, up to 6 times per year. Retakes for PPST & PPST Combined are as follows: 1 retake, $80; 2 retakes, $105, 3 retakes, $130. If you cancel your PPST Combined test appointment at least 3 business days prior to the appointment, you will be eligible for a partial refund of $60. If you cancel an individual test appointment at least 3 business days prior to the appointment, you will be eligible for a partial refund of $20. Praxis II
PRAXIS II Subject Assessment tests measure knowledge of specific subjects that K-12 educators will teach, as well as general and subject-specific teaching skills and knowledge. There are Subject Assessments, Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) Tests and Teaching Foundations Tests. Individuals entering the teaching profession take these tests as part of the teacher licensing and certification process required by many states. A number of professional associations and organizations require these tests as one criterion for professional licensing decisions. Paper test. Cost: Fee Varies. Offered Saturdays Only. TOEFL - Test of English as a Foreign Language
The TOEFL test is a requirement for admission into colleges and universities where instruction is in English. In addition, many government, licensing, and certification agencies, and exchange and scholarship programs use TOEFL scores to evaluate the English proficiency of people for whom English is not their native language. The test is four hours in length and consists of four sections: listening, structure, reading, and writing. The writing portion of the test is a 30-minute essay that may either be typed or hand written. Computer test. Cost: $140.The TOEFL can be retaken once per calendar month. If you need to cancel the test, you must give notification 3 business days before the test. Please note that there is an additional $40 cost to reschedule. You must contact TOEFL directly to make an appointment to take the test.

The Testing Service offers make-up exams for students who have missed their regularly scheduled exams and have made arrangements with their instructors to make up the exams. Cost: $5.
