EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP CORE:
EDLD 610 Leadership and Organizational Theory
Prerequisites: EDLD 507 Foundations of Educational Leadership
This course will provide existing school leaders with theories, concepts and behaviors, of effective leadership which address the challenges of schools today. The course encourages a deeper understanding of personal beliefs, styles, value and ethics required of school leaders. The development of a shared vision and strategic plan for a school or a district, along with the required understanding of theory and skill needed to implement a strategic plan, will be emphasized.
EDLD 620 The School Superintendent
Prerequisites: EDLD 520 School and Community
This course focuses on the leadership skills necessary for the school district superintendent. There is emphasis on superintendent relations with the school board and the community, and working with stakeholders to identify priorities. The development of effective and appropriate communication strategies and interpersonal skills that promote public confidence is stressed.
EDLD 630 Supervision and Instructional Leadership
Prerequisites: EDLD 512 Supervision of Instruction
This is an advanced course in the supervision of the teaching-learning process. It is designed for school administrators and superintendents or supervisors and emphasizes staff development, and (especially) job-embedded and action research for greater student achievement.
This course focuses on the systematic collections and analysis of data to inform decision making for increased student learning. Computer use is emphasized along with the ongoing collection and distribution of relevant student results data.
EDLD 645 Personnel Management in Education
Prerequisites: EDLD 512 Supervision of Instruction, EDLD 530 School Law
This course is designed to prepare educational leaders to apply effective job analysis procedures, to understand performance appraisal for instructional and non-instructional staff, to formulate professional growth plans, and to apply appropriate policies, criteria and processes for recruitment, selection, induction, and compensation of personnel with an emphasis on quality, equity and diversity.
EDLD 650 Resource Management: Finance and Facilities
Prerequisites: EDLD 550 School Finance
The course focus is on effective financial and facility planning, management, and policy making for school leaders. A knowledge of funding and resource allocation and using technology to make data driven decisions will be stressed.
EDLD 655 Legal and Policy Studies
Prerequisites: EDLD 530 School Law
This course is designed to facilitate a more in-depth understanding of legal issues relative to education and educational policy implications.
EDLD 574 Field Experience
Prerequisites: EDLD 576 Field Experience, EDLD 610 Leadership and Organizational Theory, EDLD 620 The School Superintendent, EDLD 630 Supervision and Instructional Leadership
Field Experience is one of the final experiences in the graduate education leadership program at Montana State University-Bozeman. It is designed to provide students who have finished or who have nearly finished their program to experience what it is like to provide leadership at the district level. It is an opportunity to apply and further develop leadership and administrative knowledge and skills under the guidance of a certified school leader/administrator in a site outside of the university environment.
RESEARCH:
EDCI 502 Educational Statistics II
Prerequisites: EDCI 402 Educational Statistics I
This course focuses on the application of statistical processes to the analysis of educational data. Educational problems that apply multi-factor ANOVA, multiple comparison techniques, ANOCOVA, multiple regression, JAN and factor analysis in their solution are included.
EDCI 507 Qualitative Educational Research
Prerequisites: Graduate standing and EDCI 506 Applied Educational Research
Within the context of systematic scientific inquiry, the qualitative research paradigm and approaches, approach-related data collection and management methodologies, appropriate data analysis and writing strategies, and the role of qualitative research in decision-support are addressed. A research project is conducted.
EDCI 508 Advanced Educational Psychology
Prerequisites:
An examination of theory and research related to learning and motivation for students from diverse cultural backgrounds. Practical implications for effective teaching will be identified throughout the course.
EDCI 607 Quantitative Educational Research
Prerequisites: EDCI 502 Educational Statistics II, EDCI 506 Applied Educational Research, and graduate standing.
Within the context of systematic scientific inquiry, the quantitative research paradigm and designs, design-related data collections and management methodologies, appropriate data analysis and writing strategies, and the role of quantitative research in decision-support are addressed. A research project is conducted.
EDCI 500 Seminar
Prerequisites: Graduate standing and as determined for each offering.
Students participate in preparing and presenting discussion material on topics which are not covered in regular courses at the graduate level.
EDCI 690 Doctoral Thesis/Dissertation
Prerequisites: Doctoral standing.
