Superintendent Certification
K-12 principal endorsement is a prerequisite for superintendent endorsement. An additional six (6) credits are required for candidates possessing only K-8 (elementary) or 5-12 (secondary) principal certification:
For candidates with secondary principal endorsement:
- EDLD 524, Instructional Leadership in the Elementary School, and
- EDLD 574 Elementary School Field Experience
Or
For candidates with elementary principal endorsement:
- EDLD 525, Instructional Leadership in the Secondary School, and
- EDLD 574 Secondary School Field Experience
And
Twelve (12) credits*** of graduate work beyond the Master's Degree in:

NOTE: All courses listed here (EDLD 620, 645, 650, and 655) offered every summer in two parts: 15 hours of online instruction beginning the first day of the 1st 3-week session (June 14-July 1 for summer, 2010); AND continuing with three weeks of intensive instruction on campus during the second 3-week session (July 6-26), using the following daily schedule: Monday through Friday:
- 7:30 AM - 9:30 AM EDLD 650
- 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM EDLD 645
- 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM EDLD 620
- 4:30 PM - 6:30 PM EDLD 655
***All credits required are offered every summer. If you already hold a K-12 principal endorsement, you can be eligible for superintendent endorsement by taking the four courses on-line for fifteen hours during the 1st 3-week session, and then finishing the courses by attending on campus for three weeks during the 2nd 3-week session. This shortens the time required on campus while maintaining the high standard of preparation for which Montana State University is known.
