Application for Admission

NOTE: Please make sure to read through the entire set of instructions before beginning the review process.

• Step 1 – Print unofficial transcripts from:

  • Please save paper by printing these back-to-back.
• Step 2 – Complete the Secondary Education Application for Admission Cover Sheet
  • complete top portion only of the cover sheet
• Step 3 – Complete TEPP Form for Major
  • Choose TEPP form based on the catalog year you have declared (refer to your Curriculum Sheet). TEPP forms can be found on the field placement website
  • Type in grades only for classes that have been completed.
  • Include the name of any transfer or substitution courses in the column labeled "Substitution Courses"
  • Transfer grades will have a "T" in front of the grade (i.e., TA, TB, etc.)
  • Complete Criminal Records Check self-disclosure form (last page of TEPP)
  • Print – one page to a sheet, one-sided only
  • Sign TEPP and Criminal Records self-disclosure form
  • Meet with Advisor for your major to sign TEPP
  • If adding a minor or endorsement, complete the appropriate TEPP form and obtain Advisor' signature

• Step 4 – Save a copy to a disk/flash drive or make a copy for your records.
• Step 5 – Complete Criminal Records Check
  • Criminal Records Checks are only good for one year
  • Read, print & sign the Consent and Release Letter: 
  • Print instructions for Fingerprinting & Background Check:
  • Pick up Fingerprint Card from Field Placement & Certification (Reid 247).
• Step 6 – Submit completed Cover Sheet, TEPP Form & Transcripts to Reid 132
• Step 7 –   Submit completed (This step may have been completed during EDU 223 or EDU 370, please check with Field Placement & Licensure in Reid 247 for confirmation):
  • Criminal Records Check Self-disclosure Form
  • Consent & Release Letter
  • Fingerprint Card and check for $27.25 payable to “Criminal Records” to Reid 247

Note: Failure to complete File Review paperwork in accordance with the above deadlines may delay progress through Methods, Teaching Practicum, and Student Teaching.

Program Objectives

The Department of Education offers teacher education programs for students seeking teaching careers in specific subject areas for grades five through twelve. Most of the programs are inter-departmental, with the exception of General Science Broadfield, Social Studies Broadfield, and Technology Education Broadfield, which are totally administered and housed within the Department of Education. Therefore, students who wish to complete any of the aforementioned majors will enroll in the Department of Education, whereas students who wish to complete any of the other majors will enroll in the departments offering the teaching options in their chosen areas.

In addition to its secondary programs, the Department of Education provides foundation coursework which is valuable to teachers at all levels in such areas as history and philosophy of education, multicultural education, educational psychology, human development, assessment, curriculum, content area reading, instructional computing, and exceptionality.

Professional Requirements

All prospective teachers are required to take courses in certain areas of professional education. A grade of "C" or better is required in all professional education courses. (A "C-" is not acceptable.) (See "Teacher Education Program" for entrance requirements.)

Note: A student must be admitted into the Teacher Education Program before enrolling in a methods class (EDSD 4XX or EDSD 4YY).

Secondary level endorsement will cover grades five through twelve for all applicants graduating from approved programs. Within the approved programs, emphasis must be placed on student growth and development, behavior, and reading and writing skills. Student teaching and observation periods when combined, must cover both 7-12 and 5-6 grade levels.

Sequencing

The faculty in the Department of Education recommends that any students completing a secondary education program adhere to the following sequence. We want to make sure that you have met all prerequisites when you attempt to enroll in our courses. As you fall behind in this time-line, all subsequent courses should be moved back in time as well. Note: While we recommend this sequence, there will be some variance, especially between courses taken by the end of the junior year and first-semester senior year.

Options

The TEP offers the following secondary education licensure programs:

• Option 1: Majors in Secondary Education
• Option 2: Subject Area Majors with Teaching Options
• Option 3: Teaching Minors

Teaching minors, that is, preparation for a second teaching field in addition to the major field, are offered by many departments. Teaching minors are required to accompany all teaching majors but are not required for broadfields or extended majors. Graduate degree programs are available for secondary teachers who are already certified. (See the College of Graduate Studies).
