About the institute
The Montana State University Energy Research Institute is an umbrella for MSU's energy research and
education programs, which account for roughly $15 million in research each year. The institute encompasses more
than 170 faculty, staff and students spread across 11 university departments who are working fields such as clean-coal
technology, fuel cells, wind, coal-bed methane and biofuels. Over the past several years, MSU has developed a number of
programs focused on energy, making the university a significant contributor to national and international energy research and development.
