Welcome to the ERRNIE Project

The ERRNIE Project is dedicated to improving the health of children and families. We are a research group located in Gallatin County, Montana and Whatcom County, Washington.

Our mission is to learn how nurses can help families reduce environmental risks to children. We have developed a model for environmental risk education interventions that can be provided by public health nurses in any community. While children can be exposed to environmental risks in their neighborhoods and schools, the ERRNIE Project aims to improve the health of the environment where children spend most of their time: the home.

Environmental risks in the home come from a variety of sources such as lead paint, contaminated drinking water, environmental tobacco smoke, among others. These risks can cause health effects ranging from minor learning deficiencies, to serious and life threatening diseases, like cancer. Many of the environmental risks children encounter at home can be prevented or reduced by taking practical and affordable steps.

If you are a family in either Gallatin County, MT or Whatcom County, WA and you are interested in learning more about participating in the ERRNIE Project, you may find the links to the Project Overview and For Participants helpful.
