Dr. Butterfield and Dr. Hill direct the ERRNIE RCT study. Dr. Butterfield is a public health nurse whose research addresses environmental health disparities and occupational health illnesses and injuries. For the ERRNIE RCT study, Dr. Butterfield is interested in examining the effects of public health nursing actions on family and child indicators of environmental health.

Patricia Butterfield received her bachelor’s degree from Loretto Heights College and her master’s degree in community health nursing from the University of Colorado. Her doctoral and postdoctoral work was completed in conjunction with the School of Nursing and the Center for Research on Occupational and Environmental Toxicology at Oregon Health Sciences University. Dr. Butterfield’s work as a public health nurse has influenced her ideas about social justice and environmental equity. Her publications generally follow three lines of inquiry: 1) nursing interventions to prevent environmentally-related disease, 2) occupational health in small companies, and 3) conceptual approaches for the investigation of public health problems.

Away from work, Patricia enjoys the company of her husband Phil, son Tristan, and dog Kenai. She enjoys hiking, remodeling old houses, listening to public radio, and subversive craft activities.
